This is the blog spot for Professional Studies3A, an undergraduate module presented at the University of Johannesburg.
Hello all. Marc Prensky published an article a while ago about "digital natives and digital immigrants" where he tried to understand the deep differences between the young people of today and many of their elders (like me probably :) ) In his latest article which I made available to you in our online module space (in Edulink) he continues to talk about these issues and extends his argument to include what he calls "digital wisdom".
Read the article I have provided to you, and watch the short video clip I provide at the contact session, and post your thoughts here. I am not saying anything much about the topic at present as I want to hear what you all have to say. You are welcome to read one anothers comments and reply directly to those posts or post completely new ideas. You may agree or disagree but keep it academic and interesting. I am looking forward to hearing what you have to say

The article has really openned my eyes and in the same manner tought me alot.My comments with regards to the article and the video clips is that we as educators must try by all means to live with the "times".This is because technology is taking over our children and our social life.It is therefore that since 90% of our children use the new and improved technology why can't we do the same within the teaching ground i.e teach using power point, over head projecters and and the chatting systerms used by our learners Mxit to chacck their homeworks if they do not understand something.
ReplyDeleteBut from a bigger spectrum our children are really wiser than what we were in regards to use of technology and the why some of them learn. It is therefore that i agree that technology has improved the way of learning academically for our children, thus as teachers we must degrade the use of technology in our children but learn something from them too, because education is about team work.
Technology is one of the fastest changing aspect there is. It not only changes but improves time and time again. Our memory is not as powerful as we would like it to be, and one of the ways to save data is to use digital technology. It is also a much faster way to be able to gain information and thus, teaching and learning is improved.
ReplyDeleteTeachers should make use of technology in their classes, as new generations are very familiar with the latest technology. The use of cell phones, computers, videos and blogging can improve and enhance a child’s learning. This emerge to the digital world should be embraced instead of neglected as it can and will be very useful in the future.
technology is playing a significant role in our lives today, economically, educationlly, politicaly etc. statistics shows that since from 1994 to 2007, the number of people depending on technology is alarming high. technology forms part of our lives, add value and enhancement.
ReplyDeletei`m touched by the article, it made me aware of something that i was nt aware of. it prooves how stereotype we are. we as future teachers we need to change the perception of our communities regarding cellphones, ipods, etc.
cellphones became major problems in our schools recently, whereby learners were not allowed to bring them class. the statistics shows that out of 10 learners, 9 do use phones in and outside school.
i believe that, to make leaning to be more interesting, learners need to be taught with what pleases them. techonology can be used to enhance learning. the use of chatting groups, exchange of information etc can be used by teachers to give assessment and getting to know learners (building relationship with their learners)
Is technology a good or a bad thing in the educating of learners and people outside of an academic environment????
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the article and watching the video clip, I have come to my own synopsis on this issue. I feel that using any form of technology in the learning environment could be beneficial, just as much as be a disadvantage to all involved. Firstly the advantages are that learners can access information and there after gain knowledge much quicker in today's society. I feel that this is a good thing, as it saves time and the learner can always go back and access it whenever need be, it enhances the cognitive capabilities and will help the learner to function properly in the realistic world of today. Especially if they have been exposed at a young age as this seems to be the new way of life in the 21st Century. Technology also enhances the memory and improves storage in the brain as we do tend to forget things easily.Again with the rate at which technology is developing, it will be vital for the average learner to wise up on the digital world.
As for the disadvantages that will have an impact are that learners start to become lazy, they rely solely on the internet and have no idea on how to research and obtain information from others sources such as the library or good old fashioned, encyclopeadias, newspapers and many other materials that are available still. Other effects are simply socialising and communicating face- to- face with anyone may become harder. It limits many aspects of being a child. Many learners are sometimes way more advanced in technology than the educator and so they may take advantage in class and use the internet in a non academic way. As for the elderly they basically need to shape up or ship out as the saying goes. There is another big disadvantage about technology. But this is the real world we living in, so embrace the technology for what it is, the GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY!!!!!
Amen my wonderful people to what youall have said it truely shows that at list we as prospective teachers agree on sometthing for a change. And now i am convinced that we are going to produce a better nation filled with positive minds and technologicaly advanced, just like we are doing now. This will happen only if we start to implement technology within our everyday teaching so that it can be norm to us and our learners.
ReplyDeleteFaaeza Motala I am impressed,Taryn Iam touched good for allllllllll of you Ladies and Gentlemen who are for the use of technology in our local use in our schools
Good Day, I am Taryn and I am a third year Education student. In my blog I forgot to introduce myself, so I thought that I should. I am an outgoing and friendly person and I would like to be more adventurous. I love all types of music and I support Man Chester United, I love English football. My favourite colours are green and silver and I love white tigers. My goal is to finish my degree and go on and do my honours, master’s and doctorate eventually in Education. But that is all for now, if you would like to know more about me, click on my profile and read my blog posting just above.
ReplyDeleteGood morning everybody! my name is Jenilee Axsel and i am one of your tutors for this course. I am exploring blogs with you for the first time and finding it quite facinating! this fact proves that i am not yet a 'Homo sapiens Digital'. the author of the article was quite outspoken about wisdom and the fact that digitally unenhanced people would be left behind in the future, in the sense that they would not be able to take part in the happenings and discussions of the world. i agree that digital technology allows people to access cognitive power beyond their ennate capacity and enhances their capabilities but i am not completely convinced that it is the only source of authoratative wisdom. although technology allows people to access information and knowledge from all around the world and expands opinions and perceptions it cannot replace experience that is gotten from every day dealings with individuals. this brings me to the articles prediction of how human beings will be able to successfully relate to each other when advances such as 'truth' and 'lie' detection is used. i am not sure i want every body to know exactly what i am thinking. my thoughts and feelings will permanently be on public display - a secret crush will be nothing more than common knowledge! life without technology would be bland and difficult - imagine a flat tire 30 years ago, you would have to flag down a person in a passer by car to assist you, today you phone a friend or the AA. technology should play a large role in our lives and we should endevour to learn as much as we can, still i do not believe that it is the be all and end all of existence.
ReplyDeletethank you for reading my opinion!
have a super week!

Bonjour!
ReplyDeleteI am Mondli Kunene. I have read and watched the article and the complimentary video and my conclusion about both these sources of information are as follows:
The article was well written and that is because of the way the author uses relevent examples to create context and that helps the audience to understand the topic and with understanding, the audience's curiosity grows, for example, Albert Einstein's quote was relevent to the topic discussed and the fact that the author made a reference to a previous book that he has written it means he has experience and he is exposed to a bit of reseach. He sounds a bit like an evolutionist due to the jargon he uses e.g. Homo sapiens. Furthermore, I agree with Jen about the part where the author refers to "Enhancing our insight into others", I think it is wrong and some religions will agree with me because in Christianity foretelling, mind-reading and being a soothsayer is totally wrong... This again points to my opinion about the author being exposed to evolutionistic ideologies, by his reference to mind reading. Lastly he mentions the "embedded chips and brain manipulation of science fiction become a reality"...I think that Mr. M. Prensky likes flirting with the idea of digitalising the human race. He is entitled to his opinion and I have to say he has a great imagination and if he used some of the statistics that can create a strong base for him to expand his ideas on, he would be rated amongst the good writers. I believe that technolgy is an ongoing delevopment, creating civilization and like all things, we as humankind should remenber that it is us that control technology not vice versa.
The video was simple and short. Its content wasn't eye catching due to the amount text used in contrast to images. The video can be used as an introduction to a lesson if one is planning to use the different instruments that are available to teach with, with a couple of eye-catching images, one is set to go... The Department of Education would obviously have to set legislation and regulations in terms of controlling the atmosphere that these instruments can evoke in the school premises.
Merci!
Flexibility is key in teaching...That is my thoughts.Yes we live in the era were technology is essential and is a demand too.I say:"why not?"The movies shared the very same idea of being able to juggle your teaching styles.I also add that, learners today have a better advantage with technology,so I think it will work in both partie's favour (learners and teachers) in a sense that learners will have fun learning with the accessories that are close to their hearts.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! My name is Gabrielle. I’m a third year Education student and I’m majoring in Maths and Psychology for the FET phase.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading the article and watching the movie, there were a number of thoughts, fears, questions and concerns which came up in my mind. To what extent is digital technology making life better for us, and to what extent is the development of technology disadvantaging us? Are we playing ‘God’ with all the new advances in technology? It would be extremely interesting to sit and debate these questions, considering the various opinions regarding this topic. But, ultimately, we have to accept that digital technology is a part of our lives. We cannot survive without it. And therefore, whether we like it or not, in order to function properly in today’s society, it is essential that we familiarize ourselves with digital technology and integrate it into our lives.
As educators, I believe we have a great responsibility. We are required to teach learners the skills, knowledge, attitudes and values which will enable them to function effectively in today’s society. This includes teaching learners how to use digital technology. The important thing, however, is that we need to be wise when teaching learners how to use technology. Our aim is not simply to teach learners how ‘to use the internet for research purposes’. We should aim to teach learners to critically evaluate how technology can be used, not as a substitute for their own minds, or a tool which makes them lazy, but rather as a tool which can be used to enhance their ‘unenhanced’ human mind. Technology is a wonderful thing, when used not as a replacement of human ability, but rather in conjunction with the human mind, in order to enhance it and allow it to be more efficient and accurate. This is what we should aim to do, to teach learners to know how to use technology, but in a way which compliments their own unique ideas and thought processes.
Lastly, I would like to comment that technology provides us with many new, creative and effective learning processes. As educators, we have so many different ways available to us, to test and assess learners, while still getting them excited about learning. This assignment is a prime example of a way in which we can use technology to stimulate interest in learners, making the learning process fun and simultaneously achieving an academic objective.
I have read the article and watched the video clip, and my understanding of the two is that children of these days are more technologicaly advanced than children in the older days because of that they have access to powerful and accurate information from technlogy(computer, cellphones and television). After going through the video clip i have realised that, the world in which we are living in these days is much better than ancient time where people would struggle to make a call or to type(less technology)we are living in the wealthy world. however i may say that wealthyness makes children more wiser on account of that they have access/ability to use cellphones with powerful features to access infomation from computers and variety of technologies.therefore as educators we should utilise technology to equip the learners with more information, since we have realised that they have a light about technology.i think educators should provide the learners with more knowledge that will grow and develop them, such as doing activities in the computers.
ReplyDeleteMy greetings to everyone!!!
ReplyDeleteI also have gone throgh an article and the video. For me it makes a very clear sence that in nowadays children are more interested in technology, I also agree with that because many young peaple are addicted to mxit today and that showes how advanced they are in the new technology. Our rensponsibility as educators is therefore to find out ways of educating students using the same techonology they are interested in, it also adds to the adea that children tend to become more exposed to the larger world of knowledge if they learn with computers, cell- pones, etc. In other words they are being exposed to learning through technology. Techonology should therefore be used as a tool in promoting a flexible learning process.
Hi everyone!!!My name is Waseema and I am in my third year of Education. I'm majoring in Maths and Psychology for the senior phase.
ReplyDeleteI have read this article and while doing so I reflected on my days of schooling. There are many truths that have been mentioned in the article.
Why should we force our learners to learn in a manner that does not appeal to them? Should'nt we use a strategy that provides better results and encourages learning?
Learners are interested in the everchanging technological world. By using technological methods of teaching, learnes automatically become more interested. Exciting challenges and activities can be given to them using technology in the form of google researches, doing listening comprehensions using their i-pods etc. Learners will become more involved in activities.
We should therefore use what learners use as "past-time" activities to convey educational matters across to them...
Hi yol...
ReplyDeleteAccess to technology and the effective use of technology within schools provide future teachers with the tools to meet the challenges of the classroom. Not only does it educate but makes learning more fun and interesting. Each and every individual prefer a certain style of learning, therefore it promotes diversity.with the help of other web sites such as google and the likes ,students are able to acess information for assignments and researh tasks. The use of the Internet, for example facebook and mxit also plays a major role in their relationships with their friends, their families, and their schools. Internet enhances the social life and academic work of teenagers.
The Internet is becoming an increasingly vital tool in our information. The very concept of the Internet would not be possible without technology.
Hi everyone. I am Robyn Hart and like many of you I am too a third year Education student. I am majoring in English and French (FET).
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the video clip and reading the article as well as having read some of your comments I have come to the opinion, that I agree with most of you that technology has indeed become an intricate part of our lives.
As such it is indeed known that the world in general is not static and as such neither are people, thus the continuation of development and adaptation to our forever changing environmen, and children becoming more and more technologically sound than the generations before them.
Therefore I agree with Gabi that we as future educators should most certainly become more acquainted with technology and encourage learning in a digital format so as to indeed enhance skills, attitudes and values with regards to becoming digitally sound. I also concede that applying these skills as educators also will aid to the different learning styles which inturn aids the learners' understanding and at the same time making learning fun.
sanibonani!
ReplyDeletemy name is mthetheleli majozi. what a new south africa we live in, the video made me realise how naive and wrongly we are when it comes to the use of technology in our country.
the article made me miss my days of schooling but then i reminded myself that i should not miss the days because i am going back there again as an up coming educator. though i will not be a learner anymore but then i know that i will be a learner again when it comes to technology because my intentions are to teach with what ever technology available to use at school but then i know that my learners would be the one teaching me how to use technology.
the article is true i believe but it only gives advantage to more advanced schools only and then those who will not be able to use technology will be left out. i say lets use technology the way our learners want us to.
Hi my name is Einav and I am majoring in Human Physiology and Psychology for the FET phase and I am torn between two opinions relating to the article and video…
ReplyDeleteI feel technology can benefit most learners in the schooling system by helping them and guiding them to a better learning experience and making understanding better. Learners can use technology to their advantage by finding information and acquirement the knowledge faster than if they have to go to libraries and filter through piles of books and other transcripts. More time is used doing this, time that could be utilized in other means. Technology also allows storage. Not only am I talking about the amount of information that can be stored but the way it is stored (in an organized manner so that learners can access the information with ease). The amount that can be stored in a computer let’s say or an iPod is much greater then what can be stored in our brains, and when this information needs to be recovered by a learner it can be sorted and found without much effort. All learners and educators should learn and understand the use of various technologies because technology is evolving so rapidly.
I do however feel that technology also has its downside as it could make a learner lazy and uninterested with the work at hand and makes the effort that they put into a project much less. It detaches us in a way from society and the ability to communicate with others. An interview cannot always be conducted by a text message or email. However, technology is an integral part of our lives and this should be accepted by all!
Technology has definitely changed the way we in which we go about daily tasks and obstacles. Tasks that were once tiresome can now be done with ease and in most cases “with a click of a button”. Not only has technology become widely available, but it is also under continuous development to better current programs and purposes.
ReplyDeleteI believe that digital technology should be incorporated in classrooms by educators as well as incorporating it into the curriculum. However, in most circumstances there is a lack of resources in most schools not allowing pupils to engage and interact in a digitally demanding world. Another problem that could obstruct learners from being acquainted with digital wisdom is the amount of untrained educators that are not familiar with computer learning programs. It is my view that digital wisdom only benefits a select few.
My name is Amy Haupt and I am a 3rd year education student majoring in English & Psychology (FET). I enjoy going out with friends and family, listening to music, watching movies & rugby, traveling and the theatre. I have wanted to become a teacher since I was a little girl and the passion for helping young people develop their minds and thinking had grown stronger over the years. My goal is to finish my degree at UJ and then to go and do my Honours in the United States of America while actively taking part in a teaching program designed for teachers who wish to expand their teaching practices as well as travel. I am a friendly and caring person by nature and I am always willing to lend a helping hand or sympathetic ear.
ReplyDeleteTechnology has become a vital part in all our lives. Times have changed and in order to move forward you must have some form of “digital wisdom”. I agree with Marc Prensky when he says that he does not think that technology is “wise in itself” or that “human thinking is no longer necessary or important”. These two attributes together are forming what we know today as the “digitally wise” individuals; whether it be an educator, parent, peer or co-worker, who are using technology as well as their own thinking and understanding to move forward in this every changing world in order to better themselves. Technology is no longer a dream but has become a reality and everyone lives with it today; cellphones for calls and smsing, computers for presentations, communication and emails. We are all a part of technology whether we choose to be or not.
Technology in any educational system can be advantageous as well as disadvantageous. Learners as well as educators are faced with the ever growing and expanding aspect of technology and whether or not it should be incorporated into the academic environment. I think that with technology learners can have access to a myriad of different learning opportunities and this in turn will help them to understand the work and better grasp the concepts as they will not be learning in a monotonous “textbook reading style” manner as many learners were accustom to many years ago. Learners will be able to access information more easily as information is arranged in logical ways on their computers when performing internet searches for example. If learners need to present a project and they are allowed to use technology in any way they prefer you will be allowing your learners to think creatively and not only cognitively. However, technology could also have its disadvantages as learners might become too familiar with the fact that information is so readily available to them on their computers when using the internet and they will not be using their own knowledge bases to try and work through the tasks or work given. Older resources such as books, encyclopaedias, journals and dictionaries will be forgotten and this will not benefit learners as they will not be able to gain knowledge or utilise different academic and non academic sources. Technology such as MXit & Facebook are also not helping our learners as this form of communication is via a text or online message. Face to face communication is something that all individuals will need to do in their lives and if they are being shadowed by elements such as the ones mentioned above their communication skills will not be developed accurately.
In conclusion I feel that we should all embrace this “digital age” as it is only going to expand in the future and we cannot afford to be left behind.
Should digital technology be enhanced in schools or should pupils focus more on their own judgement, problemsolving and their own abilities to adapt to new experiences?
ReplyDeleteSchools should focus more on helping children to become more independant on their own abilities. Many schools dont have the finances to even think about using digital technology and enhancing it. Technology cannot replace problemsolving abilities and judgement but can help develope it to become more used in the right context. Therefor digital technology should be embraced but in a way that pupils dont become more dependant on it but just to help them focus on what they already have and to develope their abilities.
Digital technology is the way of the future but should not take over the active thinking minds of the pupils still developing and finding themselves. Although the technology premotes the brain and cognitive thinking it should only be a source to help the thinking process and not a source to take over thinking.
In conclusion to this subject digital technology should be used but in the right way but should allow people to also focus without it.
Hey My name is Melissa Coetzee, I am currently a third year education student majoring in Life science. I have a passion for Biology and Science, and can not wait to start teaching full time
ReplyDeleteAccording to the English Oxford Dictionary Education is defined as “The Process of training peoples minds and abilities, so that they acquire knowledge and develop skills” After reading the provided Literature for this assignment my mind was opened to this idea of “Digital Learners”. I myself am defiantly a “Digital Learner”, and without the use of the technology around me I would fail to function as a person living on earth. I believe technology creates a richness in learners. The Digital world allows us to be creative and interactive; it also reaches learners on their level of understanding. I believe the “Digital learners” can be successful learners. This new thinking in education can allow learners to engage in their learning and not only acquire knowledge but the well needed “Digital” skills that are well needed in today’s society.
As teachers we need to pay attention to children’s information experiences, that is to be aware of their daily experiences and interests in order to be effective educators. “If you Cant beat em’, join em” . My only question is, since most of today’s learners are “Digital Learners” why do so many teachers refuse to enter the digital age when teaching:? Perhaps its fear of failure or financial barriers, all I can say is lets change yesterday and say hello to today!
Good evening fellow education students. My name is Rhys Smeath - Thomas. I am currently a third year education student. I am majoring in English and Psychology for the FET phase. I recently discovered my passion for teaching a few years ago after a number of years of studying in Engineering related subjects.
ReplyDeleteThe article and video clip regarding education and technology was very intersting. I mean interesting in the sense that I agree that technology has become important in everyday life and in a limited sense in education. On the other hand, it also raises questions on the negative effects it may have now and the future of education.
I do believe that technolgy has to be incorporated to a greater extenet in schools. By a greater extent I mean that projects, assignments and homework should include technolgy linked to our subject area. For example, research on literature from the internet or other sources to encourage self - learning and understanding and wisdom. At the same time, educating learners on how to distinguish accurate information from irrelevant information. I also believe that the use of iPods's and devices of a similar nature could be useful in the classroom. An educator could use the iPod and a downloaded version of a play to assist learners to learn more effectively.
However, there are a number of issues I have with technolgy and education at this point in time. The first point I would like to raise is that most schools are not in the position to incorporate technolgy completely due to the lack of resources at this stage. The other issue is how do educators monitor learners activity on devices such as iPods in a classroom and how do we as educators develop a structured curriculum that teaches all the same values before the use of technology.
In conclusion, I do agree with technolgy in education, however, only once a suitable curriculum is designed to included all learners and not a selected few and still teach suitable values and social skills required to function in society.

Ok!What most of you note carries more weight,I have to mention. However,I would like to take this opportunity to pose this question unto yoou fellow students. What about the minority of school that does not have "the needed or even the neccessary technological equipment",what measures to we take upon such?Further more, economic status also plays a crucial role in having the technological accessories in hand for the "poor".For example,I would assume you know the conditions of rural school.
ReplyDeleteDiversity in my terms is not only about race,culture...it is actually it is more than that-I would like to hear how would you accomodate the "minority"...
Hi
ReplyDeleteEducational technology, especially computers and computer-related peripherals, have grown tremendously and have permeated all areas of our lives. For most young people the use of the internet, plays a major role in their relationships with their friends, their families, and their schools. Teens and their parents generally think the use of the internet enhances the social life and academic work of teenagers. The internet is becoming an increasingly vital tool in our information society. More people are going online to conduct such day-to-day activities as education, business transactions, personal correspondence, research and information-gathering, and job searches.
Educational needs continue to shift from teaching and learning isolated skills and information within each content area, to teaching skills that enable students to solve complex problems across many areas. Educators must prepare for a technology-rich future and keep up with change by adopting effective strategies that infuse lessons with appropriate technologies. This makes a uthentic assessment needs even more important. Assessments must keep pace with effective instructional technology use.
I am Llewellyn Nelson from the small town of King William’s Town, more farm-like than town-like for your information. I share the sentiment of the author and I agree with most of the comments made. Attaining wisdom has always been a constant dynamic through the ages from the ancient hieroglyphics to reading freshly printed newspaper of the printing press in the 19th century. It is only logical to assume that we yet again have to evolve to a higher level of attaining knowledge and stimulating the creative mind.
ReplyDeleteMore importantly, we as educators have to play the patriarchs of the vast wells of information that are readily available to our youth. We should be at the forefront of digital age, constantly being in search of news ways to improve our practices in our calling.
I absolutely agree with Prensky’s journal discussion and also the video I watched. Yes, I also believe that digital technology can be used to better the practice of education. With that said, I cannot help but ask myself how relevant this is to developing countries like South Africa. These strategies may be applied in private schools or to the minority of wealthy digital natives in our country, but are they really relevant in schools where they struggle to supply books to the overcrowded classrooms.
All I am bringing to attention is that new digital advances are broadening the gap between the digitally wiser and the digitally disadvantaged. I am aware that our government has made efforts to supply enriching technologies to some schools across the country, but where we are just starting to crawl (from a technological view) developed countries are making leaps. Prensky fronts a similar question in his conclusion, “Is it equally available to all?”
In conclusion, I do get the message of the journal and video. Where possible, educators should always be aware of new ways to keep the teaching profession interesting, especially for the learners who are used to being stimulated mentally on a higher technological level. With that said, I also insist that we as educators should not forget to teach our learners how to do inquires at an actual library and how to work out long division with pen and paper. Though a dying art, tactile, social and physical skills cannot be improved digitally, not in this country, at least not yet.
Hi guys.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Laura-Jane and i am also a 3rd year FET student. I am studying Geography and Biology.
I am a very traditional person and technology makes no sense to me so I disagree with most of the comments in the movie but I do understand them. They asked a question about who the learners asked questions of before Google - EASY- the thing people from previous generations called books and ENCYCLOPEDIAS. Sms’s and emails are not reading!!! I don’t know who came up with that nonsense. BOOKS are the answer to a child’s reading problem, as well as their imagination problems. I think that children now days are just expected to be proficient with computers and technology, even if they don’t want to be. The movie mentioned that some children from the age of four are using computers and major technology, cant parents see that this is wrong and it effects the learner’s imagination if they are so caught up in computer games and emails. They forget how real life is and what an imagination could do for you, even as you get older. I use mine all the time. The movie sounds like it is complaining about the teachers and that we are responsible for the fact that learners don’t concentrate and can’t follow in class. This is not entirely their fault as the parent allows them to spend ages on technology rather than normal pursuits that would help their intellect.
I do agree with the article that wisdom can come from a digital means, and im not saying that it shouldn’t be used in the classroom but it shouldn’t be as prominent as others would like it to be. I love Google but it should not be used for all things. I am a digital immigrant and don’t see that it has affected me as much as the article would have me believe. I also agree that we all do need to be digitally wise but to what extent does this digital wisdom start taking over our lives and our human connections. The enhanced mind is a powerful tool and should be used when the need arises but in some instances this is not necessary.
Hi...Im Gcwali Mkhonza and this is my opinion. After reading the article and watching the video it has re-affirmed my belief that technology is slowly taking over every aspect the global system. In particular computing has already enriched and enhanced people's lives in countless ways, but we've only begun to see how it will transform our lives for the better. By giving students access to a new world of information, sparking creativity, and facilitating rich communication and collaboration across vast distances, computers have long been a powerful tool for education. The Internet has brought an unprecedented level of great educational content to a wide audience, encouraging teachers to share curriculums and resources worldwide.
ReplyDeleteLearner’s interest in modern technology has dramatically increased and it has become part of their everyday lives. It stimulates them and promotes creative thinking.
As teachers we also need to evolve with these new concepts in order to relate better to our students and introduce a whole new, better system of learning.
Every learner learns in different ways. One thing every student has in common is that they are “digital learners”. Meaning they learn through technology, be it from their cell phones, computers, iPods or television. Technology has taken over the old fashion “pen and paper” and “textbooks” learning and teaching.according to our material given to us,college graduates spend over 40 000 hours using technology such as computers, cell phones and television. Google is used often-2.7 million searches a month. Digital learners send more than 200 000 emails or instant messages by the time they graduate college this means they are reading a lot, increasing their reading skills, their language skills and it can help improve socialising skills if it is worked correctly.Children are starting to use technology from very early ages. Before the digital times, becoming a successful student entailed studying the right facts before a test and getting superior marks or passing the class. Creativity was not an issue and this can become exceptionally boring for both student and teachers.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a fact that only 21% of matric students find their work interesting. Since students find technology fun and interesting and already know how to use it, integrating ones teachings will make the students exited about their work and will probably result in better grades. Teaching can take place wherever, whenever and for whatever when you use technology to teach. The disadvantages that will be an obvious issue is that learners will begin to become sluggish; if they rely exclusively on the internet and have no idea on how to research and obtain information from others sources. It limits many aspects of being a child.the fun part of childhood is getting dirty, making mistakes and learning from it, not having 'spell check ' fix them.
But, the first problem to tackle when trying to encorpratein digital learning and teaching into schools is training the older teachers at schools to use technology.....
Hi everyone
ReplyDeleteI 'm Mfan'khona.I would like to express my own point of view as far as the digital technology is concerned.
As far as I am concerned digital technology is good and essential. As it has been said it enhances and enables us to be creative and innovative. It makes life good and satifying because we can avoid spending money and energy by using emails, phones and so forth. In a way digital technology does influence the way we think and the way we act because when you look at what we know you can see that technological tools like radio, televiosion, cellphones have played a tremendous role.I mean we able to debate about the world's economic downfall,Zim's problems,Obama's victory because technological tools keep us updated. We all need to appreciate and accept the existance and the role of technology.
Basically digital technology is good if it's used well.I mean it has it's advantages and disadvantes.I have already spoken about the advantages of it above.I would like to agree with Atlantic Magazine when it says some technological tools make our minds lazier or less able. When you look at children who attend schools today you can see what I am talking about. They cannot count numbers without calculators.Husbands and wifes cannot remember birth days of their lovers and they rely on cellphones and laptops. If somebody steals your cellphones and laptops, you lose everything. Why?Because your mind has been taught to relax and enjoy comfort zone.
I would like to disagree with the notion that human mind cannot dicide own its own.People dicide and use some technological tools to implement their dicisions.I mean in the begining there was no technology but someone thought of creating something called technology. And today that person and others use the product to create more.In the past people were creating fire, hoes, axes, shoes without the help of technology.Basically the list of such things is endless.
In conclusion I would like to appreciate the existance of technology and encourage people to use it so that we can advance because human mind plus digital technology equals development.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article and viewing the video clip, one can state that technology is important in teaching and learning. The use of technology in the classroom makes learning a pleasure for all kinds of learners. For example, when a lesson is computerized, a visual learner would find it easy to understand because there would be pictures that explain the terms and for auditory learners, there would be sound clips to explain the content of the lesson.
The other advantage of technology in education is that we are in an era where children engage themselves in indoor activities such as playing computer games and spending time in chat rooms. In so saying, by having lessons that are technology based will be engaging learners in things that they love and that keep them entertained so they will not lose interest within a short period of time.
Through the use of computers one can also say that learners are being prepared for the corporate world where internet and computers are used in many instances. One can also say that by encouraging the use of computers, learners are also being helped to adapt to an ever changing world especially when it comes to what technology has to offer.
However, one cannot only say that computerized lessons will be an advantage to every learner in every classroom since schools and learners are different. We cannot turn a blind eye on the fact that not every school in South Africa is technology advanced and that every learner has a computer at home. Some schools’ learning material is limited even though the government is continually trying to close the gap. Laura-Jane said that “BOOKS are the answer to a child’s reading problem, as well as their imagination problems” and we cannot ignore the fact that children should be encouraged to read to understand better and it will not be easy to do that through some technology devices. For example, reading is another way of learning and having to send a learner an SMS will be misleading since SMS consist of spelling that is extremely incorrect and that may lead to learners adapting that style of writing even in formal assessments.
In conclusion, one can therefore say that the use of technology in lessons can work but educators should not rely highly on technology and start to turn a blind eye on text books because they also have a purpose to serve in a learner’s life.

ReplyDeleteDigital Immigrants and Digital Natives to Digital Wisdom
The Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants shows the understanding and differences between young people and elders today. As we more into a new era the distinction between Digital Natives and Digital immigrants become less relevant, and we start thinking about Digital Wisdom. Digital technology does not make people smarter but makes them wiser. Digital technology brings out the cognitive powers and enhances our capabilities. People, who interact in technology regularly, are those whose brains can organize and structure things in a wiser way and will achieve a lot in the future. Digital enhancements have a lot to do in people’s lives as it helps everything we do. Digital enhancements consist of digital tools, digital technology and digital data gathering. Digital cognitive enhancements consist of laptop computers, online databases, three dimensional virtual simulations, online collaboration tools, PDA’s and a range of others. We call a digital enhanced person “Homo Sapiens Digital”. An interesting definition of wisdom comes from Howard Gardner who suggests that women may be seen in the breadth of issues considered in arriving at judgments of decisions. Technology helps us on moral and ethical choices. Future technology will allow people to make decisions quicker compared to the past.
An un-enhanced person is limited in their perceptions by the processing power and functioning of the human brain. As a result they go astray in their thinking in ways that limit their wisdom, for example:
they cannot see, hear, touch, feel or smell beyond their range of senses
they forget easily
they inaccurate and make assumptions
Google and others are massive amounts of stored data and are new type of scientific analysis. The world becomes more complex and those who are un-enhanced human brains in technology will face a lot of negative effects. One of the greatest barriers to human understanding and communication is that we cannot see inside another persons mind. Digital Wisdoms means not just manipulating technology easily or even creatively, it means making wiser decisions because one is enhance by technology. Within lifetimes to come more digital mental enhancements will come about.

My name is Anthea Froneman and I am in my third year teaching. It is my passion to educate learners in a way that is enjoyable and is both beneficial to me as an educator and the learners that I am educating, and I feel that ‘digital wisdom, is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteTechnology has become so advanced that even me as an individual sometimes struggles to keep up with this new ‘digital wisdom’ and the costs that are involved, not that I am complaining, but it is wonderful to think of all the advantages the new age brings us. With the new world of technology we could achieve so much more as educators but the problem is do all educators have the resources to expand on this ‘digital wisdom'?
The educators that have just starting or who are about to start can use their ‘digital wisdom’ and try incorporate that into teaching, But what about the older educators who do not want to become ‘digital immigrants’? Everything today is on computers and I feel life has become so advanced. I feel privileged to be a digital native and that I have been brought up using technology.
Learners all learn differently but using all the different technological resources, education will become fun and enjoyable and perhaps we can try to help the older educators to become ‘digital immigrants’ and experience the wonders of our digital world.
Good day... My name is Chanelle. I have a real passion for children and teaching and would like to make a real difference one day. Not only in my students lives, but by the others they will touch with my guidance. I believe in the pay it forward system and I think that it is the perfect way to make and be the cahnge in the world.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I am totally challenges when it comes to technology. But I must say that I agree with the article. Times are forever changing and we as teachers hold the future in our hands. If we do not cahnge with the times, we do not only keep ourselves out of the loop, but the future president, model, technician etc. We have the building blocks that build the future of our learners. We need to keep them and ourselves digitally active and pliable. We need to except and embrace the changing era. Why can't we use new teaching methods? Why do we need to stagnate? That is the whole point, we can move with the times and rather be prepared for the future.
I also believe that not everything should be based on this digital wisdom. If everything is based only thereon we will lose our sense of belonging and privacy. Some things are rather left unsaid, or unchanged.
Thanks guys.
Have a great blessed week.

ReplyDeleteHomo sapiens digital or Homo sapiens “unthinkable”
After watching the video and reading through the article, I’ve come to my own view on this very captivating issue. The world today is even more technological than ever, this article is stating what each of us already know. That the future is not a battle between man and the machine but the process of man using his inventions to enhance life as we know it. Living in the 21st century we as humans become more digitally enhanced every day by means of buying new self phones, laptops, cars ext. These things develop us into homo sapiens digital or digitally enhanced humans. Living in a world were it is survival of the fittest (a technologically developed world) the advantage will go to those who intelligently combine their own innate capabilities with their digital enhancements.
Being digitally enhanced makes live in any profession easier, living a digitally enhanced live doesn’t necessarily make you smarter but makes you wiser than your counterpart; whom may be less know to the world of technology. Using your technological abilities in the classroom were you are teaching pupils will open a whole new world and dimension to these learners; a world that most of them might not have heard of.
Being digitally enhanced means having a greater wisdom than the people who lived before you, because the human mind can’t remember every single detail data not stored or used regularly goes lost after a while using databases can prevent us from forgetting what we should have known in the first place. Using databases can make your working and living life a more satisfactory one, which means having more time for oneself and to enjoy the pleasures of live. Using your digital wisdom can help you to interact with people across the world, to collect info from any library, encyclopedia or book imaginable. Digital wisdom doesn’t mean manipulating technology or finding a way to be less active it means that we as human have the ability to do more in less time in our fast developing and chancing world.
Hello, ek is 'n trots Suid-Afrikaans en ek gaan my mening oor die leesstuk in Afrikaans lewer.
ReplyDeleteMy mening oor die leesstuk oor digitale aanmoediging is vir my nodig in skole juis omdat al die kinders van die 21ste eeu so baie te doen het met tegnologie. Moet my nie verkeerd verstaan nie want ek se nie alle tegnologiese onderrig is korrek nie.

ReplyDeleteHello almal!!
ReplyDeleteMy naam is Corlia, en net soos die res van julle almal swot ek ook B.Ed. My hoofvakke is Sielkunde en Engels. Ek het Engels 2A en B in 2008 klaar gemaak... Jippy!! My belangrikste doelwit op hierdie stadium is om al my vakke deur te kom... Ek wil nie graag langer as 4 jaar studeer nie!!
Ek vat hierdie "blog" as voorbeel; Ons as 3de jaar studente kan mekaar se opinies lees oor dieselfde onderwerp. Netso kan jy inligting van mense in ander lande kry oor amper enige onderwerp van jou keuse.
Mense in die 21ste eeu moet almal daarna streef om "Digital Humans" te word want glo dit of nie, dit is die toekoms! Maar jy moet darem nogsteeds weet hoe om 'n "old fashion" briefie te skrywe met die hand vir die dag wat jou "VPN" by die werk nie wil "connect" nie...

Accommadation? Is that what technology is. In the article of Marc Prensky is technology there for us in the future to accommodate us and I agree. In the past we took hours to finish with an assessment just to find information in the library. Know we just Google and find information in seconds.
Technology is part of our lives; imagine no internet we will still suffer in the library for hours to find information. I Believe Technology am a good thing in the educating of learners and people outside of an academic environment.
Children must learn about it because the real world out there is technology. I agree everyone will get lazy, but we have to go with time and move on and use the technology we have.
Hi,my name is Ntombiyoxolo Nono currently a full time student at UJ.After reading the article and watching, the movie it occured to me that Technology has advantages and disadvantages,However what we need to be awere of as educators is that as time changes technology is upgraded and influences our livesand our learners. It is also a parent view on what age do children get cellphone for example even so this is quit a controversial issue amoungst parents but many mothers agree that from around age 12 when children start going out without any parental supervision is the best time.'My kids have a cellphone when they spend the weekend with the father, but it's not technically theirs it's for their use to say goodnite to me or call me if there's a promblem, other than that they don't use it'says Sarah my neigbor mother of 2.So whether we approve as adults or not but technology has some advantages in our lives and circumstances.
ReplyDeleteWe face research conducted by the University of Colorado and the children's hospital in Bostom found that a typical person can safetly listen to an iPod for about 5 hours per day at 70% full volume for more than five minutes a day through an iPod can increase the risk of hearing loss in a typical person the study also found that some people have "tougher" ears than others and thus able to listen to louder music for longer periods. There is no way of knowing who has more or less sensetive ears and who is more prone to damage from listening. As I have mentioned before that it has advantages and disadvantage and the diadvantage will be it makes learners to be lazy because they forget the importance of the dictionary and encyclopidias and it also promotes distractions in class because learners go online(Mxit,Facebook) in the presents of the educator.
In conclusion I will like to say yes Technologgy has much influence in our lives but we as educators need to cut to the chase and explain exctly what is expected of our learners for a certain assingment like research from a journal if it is,and also have to make them rely on other sources either than the internet in order to empower them more.

ReplyDeleteI found the "Digital Wisom" article very interesting to read. The video really did not make too big an impact on me but I must say that neither do advertisements - I am simply not that way inclined.
Mr. Prensky states that "Digital wisdom is a twofold concept..." and that is a fair statement. It is possible that all humans could become wiser by improving our capabilities, especially when it comes to technology. Knowledge is much more widely available, not just in libraries where all the "intelligent" people converge. There is now access to animated videos with sound for those who cannot read - which - contrary to common belief - does not mean that you are "dumb". People who do not have access to libraries and even reading skills, can therefore learn just as much and the so called smart people who are used to adapting anyway. They should not have many problems in learning this new skill.
It does however sadden me that so many less people will prefer to go to libraries, where one can literally smell the age old books and yes, age old knowledge. It is truly something to miss out on. I find myself in awe especially in the law sections of libraries, where everything that we have done to reach everything that we stand for today is written up. One can literally smell the wisdom.
Andy Clark and David Chambers (1998) argue that we humans have become very reliant on digital technology. One teenager was even reported saying that he loses half of his brain when he loses his cellphone. This is unfortunately true. People do not know how to keep an appointment anymore because "we can always phone and say we're running late". We do not listen to directions anymore because we can always use the GPS - which by the way, is not always reliable. Digital error? Human error? Think about it.
The idea of changing the name for humans to "Homo sapiens digital" is truly profound. Mr. Prensky seems to have forgotten that changing is what we humans do. It seems as though he would like his idea to be labelled onto all humans. If this does happen I hope that he realizes that this too, will inevitably change.
The definitions of wisdom were very interesting. There is one man that I have come accross in a book that in my opinion truly defines wisdom. The book's name is "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. For those of you who do not take too much pleasure in reading I suggest that you watch the "digitally enhanced" movie.
Prensky states that the unenhanced brain will soon be insufficient for wise decision making. He seems to forget that just a few paragraphs earlier he sides with the definition of wisdom that says wisdom is the "practical, creative and emotionally satisfying solution to complicated human problems". These things that he mentions cannot be found in a folder on a Blackberry, I assure you. He also mentions that we are inhibited by the processing powers of the brain. Seeing as we only use about 5% of our brains, this is a very bold statement to make - one with which I cannot agree.
Overall the article an enjoyable read and I will use my human emotion, practicality and creativity to take what I can from this article and make my own decisions about what I percieve to be wise and which tools I use to improve my wisdom.

ReplyDeleteMy naam is Terina Landman,ek is 'n derde jaar student wat onderwys swot by die Universiteit van Johannesburg ! Ek doen Senior Fase Wiskunde en hierdie jaar Funksionele Wetenskap!Ek is mal daaroor om tyd saam met my vriende en familie te spandeer! Genoeg oor my ...

ReplyDeleteWell according to Wikipedia the term "technology" comes from Greek origins, "thechnologia": "techne" meaning "craft" and "logia" meaning "saying".
It is very important to have technology at our finger tips, it makes it easier to access new information and to communicate, technology has evolved in such a way it has made it very fun to learn new concepts, but the human race has become very dependent on technology, what if there is no electricity...what are you going to do???? Do kids of today know how to use a "BIB" to look for books if technology has failed us? But when you think about technology; it is a craft that we use to say something, like the blog for instance.
Technology is here to stay so get use to it! But don’t get sucked into the technological vortex!
the article and the vedio emphasises that we must prepare our people and encourage them to adopt a global perspective.
ReplyDeleteAs for the impact of technology on education, new information and communication technologies such as internet and multimedia player have changed the way of teaching, while students are more able to use technology as a learning tool.We must therefore capitalize on these emerging technologies to improve the effectiveness of our education system.
Hi ladies and gentlemen.
ReplyDeleteConcerning digital "wisdom" it is my opinion that technology is robbing us of many skills and abilities that were once taken for granted such as reading and writing skills (now replaced with 'sms langauge' and 'spell-check'), not to mention the ability to do mental arithmetic (replaced by the ever-so-handy pocket calculator). Everything about our humanity is becoming lazy and inefficient. Am I the only person on the planet offended by the fact that there are people who believe an inanimate box of plastic and all sorts can think more critically and logically than I? Or can make more sound decisions than I? Perhaps we should consider how life was before all the recent technological advances. Think back for a moment...imagine the lifestyle those people once lived...In general, life was a lot less quantity and a lot more quality.
However, I do not believe that longing for what used to be will solve anything, and, on learning of all the breath taking new advances such as devices designed to fly aeroplanes with one's mind, I have only this to add: The amount of information that is so readily available to us via technology should be used in an effort to INCREASE our knowledge instead of DECREASE our workload. Let us be wise and take heed the warnings of John MacClain in the movie, Die Hard 4.5 and other Hollywood blockbusters that hint at the fact that artificial intelligence could be a little dangerous if taken too far. Remember, much in moderation can be considered healthy. But, taken overboard, we could be sitting with an entire population of unskilled, unintellectual, asocial, attention deficit, hyperactive unhealthy misfits that are incapable of doing even the simplest of tasks.
Hello. My name is Monique Esprey.
ReplyDeleteI agree that technolgy is the future and that it will increase oue wisdom as well as our brain capacity with more information. However I do not believe that it will be benefecial to everyone as not all people have access to the internet or can afford to buy computers and maintain them. many people who live in Johannesburg for instance, which is considered a reasonably urbanised and metropolitan city are illeterate and have nevre even used a computer.
If technology is to be the future then maybe the government should ensure that that all schools are supplied with computers and skilleed proffessionals who can educate learners on the proper use of technology. This could ensure that all learners, especially those in rural areas arte not at a technological disadvantage. Learners with disabilities should also be catered for as they are also part of the future and the countries future workforce. There are specialised computers for the disabled and they are always being upgraded and improved upon. The challenge with this is that these computers are even more expensive and scarce. It would be great to present a problem like this to learners and see what they could do about trying to alleviate such a challenge.
Hi my name is lesego
ReplyDeleteGood day to you all my colleauges.
I am from a big town in north west province called Taung. In this village people were not yet digitally enhanced as a result when i completed my matric in 2003 I decided to come study Social work here in (RAU) Unversity of Johannesburg that was in 2004.I had a problem with my first assigment I had to type and i had no clue how to start.I was using my index finger all the way imagine it was a six page assigment. That is when it hit oh i need to do a computer course I could not go on like this and i went ahead and did the course.
This has reminded me that we need technology in our lives.Even though sometimes i disagree with this i always contradict myself, the reason being when i started having a cellular phone i started to become lazy expecting my cellular phone to do everthing for me. Befor i had a cellular phone i used to memorize every phone number that was given to me but after having a cell phone i erased all the number in my memory and i can not memorize numbers anymore. And we expect learner to be imbecilic people for me it is as if we are letting them to lazy around and not do much work.It all started with OBE learners being given a chance tolearn in thier own way.For instance finding pictures of celebrities and writing someting about them and working in pair or as a group.
The movie clip was all about digital enhancement of people even the article, it is the same thing after all. They both talk about the importance of technology in our lives.People always say that if they lose thier cell-phone they lose half thier brains some even say they cannot live without thier cellphones this is bad thinking.
I agree with L.Nelson i always do anyway,he said that teacher needs to make teaching more interesting for learners because if we do not keep it that way they will be bored and when they are bored they do not listen to a teacher. In that case they fail the teacher's subject.
In conclusion i will say learning should be interesting for everyone including the teacher, we are motivated when a lesson is interesting and that can be achieved when learners and teachers work together and not aganist each other.
Thank you Sir for the video clip it really helped.
I think the use of Technology in our our classroom can be both effective and ineffective depending on the availability of the resource as well as the usage of those resource by teachers in order to teach learners.
ReplyDeleteThe positive part of using technology in the classroom is that of catching learner's attention and engage them to learn in some way. Also using their phones or ipots when they are doing their tasks can be very productive. But as i mentioned early it all depend on the resource and how they use it which in turn also require creativity and a lot of thinking.
It can, also negatively affect teachers and learners if the resources or rather the knowledge to use the available material is not sufficient. teachers cannot teachb something which they do not have deep understanding of.
saince technology seems to be taking over our live as it's been mentioned in the aticle (Digital wisdom), technology itself cannot function without the influence of people. So according to my understanding the use of technology is good but also we have to consider other factors as well
The article and video clips contain the most interest information about the use of digital native and digital immigrants. The technology is the most useful equipment as the teachers and learners are flexible in obtain more information in their field of learning. In the education are promote interaction amongst learners in the classroom situiation and the use of computers and cellphone in the classroom can enhance or increase the level of knowledge and interaction for the learners obtain at the end of lesson.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is the future method of conduct lesson in the classroom as its the give learners more opportunity to give more via google, yahoo and other internet resources.
I agree with Donna-Jesse concrening the fact that technology are the easy ways of acess information and that its here to stay and we neeed to get use of it for our sake.
Thank You for article and video clips in give us valuable facts and ideas to promote learning for future geneartions

I belive that every single person has to move with time.Technology is improving each and every year and i think that has an important effect on the education. As teachers we can improve the standard of learning by using this technology to access new information and communicate it to our learners.Learners will not have to work hard which means that even the hard work given to the learners can be finished in a shortest period of time.
However we must also remember that not all of the learners can have the access to this things. Some of the schools are still not fully equiped to support technology tools like computers or internet. This can bring a grate imbalance in education which may have a nagetive effect on the disadvantaged school and those children who can not afford latest cellphones, ipods, laptops etc.
In my point of concluding i support and recommend this "digital wisdom" but it can only benefit those who can afford and those who can not will be left behind unrecognised
Hi My name is Siphesihle Hadebe,I'm doing third year in Education majoring in English and Psychology (FET). Reading the article and Watching the movie has opened my eyes in a big way because yes! I was aware that technolgy is being used everytime and eveywhere I go but I was not realising the impact it has on the future.I agree with most of the comments that let us use technology into our advantage.
ReplyDeleteTechnology continues to develop and it is advancing everyday and one cannot avoid that.As future educators we need to find the inner drive for children to learn, what can make them be interested, grab their attention in learning? Looking around and seeing that technology is been used all over and a lot of children are trapped in it, why no try and make use of it more often and enhance learning. As it has been said a couple of times that if you can't beat them join them. Out of all that lets try to make children creative and innovative using technology. I think trying and working hard, technology can trigger the cognitive wisdom.I also think human cognitive plus technology equals to reaching higher levels. Lastly somewhere somehow one is bound to be trapped in the world of digital technology, so lets us all transform teaching through education.

Hello, my name is Nthabiseng Maruping.I am currently doing my third year in education. My goal is to study further to obtain my Honours, Masters, and Doctorate. Hopefully become Professor of Education.
ReplyDeleteI have read the article and watched the video. My opinion is that: I agree, this is a technological age and that we should embrace and encourage digital enhancement. Reason being, technology is a broad concept that deals with namely knowledge which maybe tools, crafts etc. Furthermore, it has affected us humans such that it has given us the ability to control and adapt to its environment. It has also affected our society and surroundings in a number of ways, for instance; computers make us a global society and made communication as fast as the blink of an eye which results in quickly sharing ideas. Therefore making it possible for us to work with others in our field of study (Bed) to make that technological advancement at quantum speed. Hence I and you can share ideas and comment on blog.
So, digital enhancement should be encouraged in schools and be used as a tool because it will aid in advancing schools and is a great opportunity for us as prospective teachers to make learners projects more engaging, challenging and authentic. Modern schools cannot keep on ‘dishing’ the same old education to today’s learners. Nowadays kids play Xbox with people whom they do not know or others even text each other via mxit. Therefore we should adapt and adjust to our kids “new world”.
A warm welcome to all.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Kurwyn Adams and i am a third year education student at the University of Johannesburg majoring in Mathematics and Accounting. I am very passionate about my work and enjoy learning. I am from south Johannesburg (Ennerdale) and it is in this area that i completed my matric in 2006.
After watching the movie and reading the article, it becomes clear that as time goes on, things start to change. If we consider how technologically advanced we were when we were at school in comparison to the types of learners of today, we can identify that there is a big difference. This is mainly due to the fact that technology is taking over the lives of the present and future generations and thus an integration between various subjects should be intertwined with technology which in turn will lead to a better nurturing of learning upon our learners. Technology creates a medium for learning that learners enjoy to use because it is more "fun" for them to engage in this way and it would be more beneficial for teachers so that teachers can reach their learners in order to foster learning in a more in depth way. Thus would also help various types of learners to undersatnd and apply themselves since technology can foster visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning.
We should also keep in mind that not all people have access to technology and thus a serious re-assessment should be done in accordance with the budget so that the funds budgeted for education can be utilised more effectively especially in equipping all schools with computers, internet etc. so that a more advanced and better form of learning can occur amongst all our learners across the nation and even world wide. If we can create a homogeneous society where an interaction between subject content and technology can occur, then we have not only educated our learners, but also paved their way to a better future as they play out their function in society.
I would just like to conclude with the following phrase: To be an educator is to touch someones life forever
Goeie dag aan almal wat dieselfde leesstuk moes gelees het wat ek gelees het wat Marc Prensky geskryf het.
ReplyDeleteMy naam is Bernard en ek is 'n 3rde in die Universiteit van Johannesburg. Ek is huidiglik in my 3rde jaar en ek studeer onderwys ( senior fase ). My hoof vakke is Ondernemingbestuur en Ekonomiese Bestuurswtenskappe.
Dit is al van my kant af.
Totsiens.
Hi, ek is Lelanie Kruger, ‘n derdejaar student. My hoofvakke is Afrikaans en Sielkunde.

ReplyDeleteAs I read through the article and watched the video clip, both the article and the video clip made me realise how important technology is in the classroom. Technology brings life it enable the learners to enjoy what they are being taught in the classroom. The video made me realise how almost everything we do and use in this days is linked to technology. Most of the learners in schools are digital and therefore teachers should become digital as well in order to accommodate their learners and make the lessons they give interesting. We as teachers cannot run away from the fact that technology is taking over a lot of things spontaneously. For example, the article pointed out an example of how we no longer use the sun to determine the time like in the old days, we now use pocket watches and cell phones to determine the time. This shows that our old way of teaching using chalk and the blackboard will eventually become a thing of the past.
The video also point out that learners will enjoy school more if they are allowed to use their cell phones and I-pods in the class room as such things can be used to write note, they can use face book and MXit for discussions which can bring fun into learning. Teachers can also use power point presentations, projectors and a lot of digital media to present lessons and educate their learners. Therefore, the article and the video clip made me as future teacher to realise how using technology in the classroom to the future digital learners will improve the teaching and learning of my learners. Therefore, as a teacher, I have no choice but to use technology in my classroom.
DIGITALLY WISE OR STOOPID?
ReplyDeleteHonestly technology has taken over the world. There was a time when people did not know how a computer operated or how to text on a cell phone. Today, kids at the age of 10 can use a computer better than a 45 year old. I think what makes technology more favorable and acceptable is the fact that it connects so many people from all over the world at the same time. These very same people share a culture that is so unique and advanced. They even have their own language. I think that taking advantage of that fact and using technology in a classroom would be a better way of getting learners more involved and responsible for their education.
I know that a learner would prefer reading from a computer than a book; they would rather use Google than go to the library first. Learning through technology would make classroom interaction more fun and valuable where learners are looking forward to coming to class and wondering what the next challenge is. Being digitally wise or advanced introduces learners to a new, dynamic way of learning. If the Government and the school is willing to provide teachers with necessary tools like computers and learners are able to bring cell phones once in a while to class then teaching and learning would not be such a drag. Whether we like it or not, the world is forever changing. Technology will get better, more complicated and favorable. The question is why don’t the learners get to use this technology at school? Interaction would improve, learner attention would improve and learners would be able to be creative and critical.

helo im sthembile zwane and im currently enrolled a B.Ed degree at the university of johannesburg. having read the article combined with the experience i have had with digital technology i find it hihgly essential to state the use of technology in education is most definately to the benefit of the learners and educators alike. in ma honest opinion it can not be argued just how much technology has improved the world and perhaps it can be argued that as technology evolves the more the standard of our eduucation improves therefor educators should be well equipped to use technology to their advantage.
ReplyDeletei find technology essential for the cognitive development of our learners as well as our teachers simply because technology evokes creativity. technology can also be used as a social tool which can connect learners from different backgrounds.
for education to be successful proper communiction is required, whereas technology enhances communication through digtal technology such emails, blogging, texting as well as the internet.
perhaps it safe to say it is highly emparative to state that for the future of our education to be preserved technology has to be intergrated more and more into our education system so that our learners and society may be well equiped for the 21st century.
Technology to be or technology not to be, that is the question.
ReplyDeleteIn our current day and age, we have all come to rely heavily on technology. If you take something as simple as a cell phone, its not just a cell phone but a mini computer with the ability to make phone calls and send smses if you need it to but its main function is to be a miniature computer. Therefore technology is our future, it is all around us and we have become heavily reliant on it for our survival.
For the youth of today they are even more reliant on technology than ever before. Todays youth are excessively good at multitasking, obtaining large amounts of information in a short space of time and are able to do many different things at a time, for example, surf the net, send an sms, watch TV, listen to the radio, chat over the pc and hold a conversation with a parent or peer whilst typing up an assignment. This is all due to the fact that the youth of today has been born and grown up with technology and they are able to adapt and change to and with the new technology.
Personally I feel that technology is both good and bad for us as educators. Technology is good in that it allows us as educator to make our teaching a lot more interesting for the children and it allows the children a lot more freedom to explore as well as a sense of control over what we as educators are teaching them. But on the down side it makes learning a lot easier for learners providing an abundance of information at their fingertips and very often they obtain the wrong information because there is so much in accurate information on the internet, not to mention the dangers of the internet. But mainly it makes learners lazy when it comes to actually reading books or doing research as its far easier to obtain book reviews or copy and paste information from the internet. It is also possible for the vast amounts of information on the internet to confuse learners and frustrate them and complicate their learning as they are unsure of what information to use and if also makes it difficult for them to form their own opinions as they have so many different opinions that are bombarding them at once.

Good day and a warm welcome to everyone. I am Zahraa’ Karodia a third year student. I am majoring in accounting and business management. Well I choose education as there is nothing better than to pass on knowledge.
ReplyDeleteUsing technology as a teaching aid, might be a brilliant and innovative way of teaching, but living and teaching in South Africa, this method will not prove effective enough as yet. Many pupils come from rural areas and do not have the privilege of having luxuries of a cell phone or even a computer let alone the internet. Using technology in areas were children come from disadvantaged background will be of a disadvantage to them. Up market schools and pupils that can afford these products will benefit from this method. Remember parents might send their pupils to wealthy schools expecting a better education but many parents just barely manage to pay the school fees. Technology becomes an added expense to these parents and resulting in many pupils not having these products although they in wealthy schools.
Google search a service that helps with practically anything that we need to find out about. Great! But this is a way of getting people and youngsters not to think. For instance a school supports cell phone learning and a question is asked in class, no one thinks about it. Cell phones pop out and every one Google’s for the answer. So what’s the point of the teacher standing there? Yes I agree it’s an amazing way of gaining attention in a classroom but who’s doing the thinking, who’s doing the physical writing? Children will rely on technology to spell, calculate and even read for them. This way of teaching is encouraging individuals to rely on technology.
Hi everyone! i am Mzwandile Ntabeni, a student at the university of johannesburg. I am currently studying for Bachelor of education degree. I am looking forward to enrol for Honours and cannot wait to finish my studies.
ReplyDeleteDigital wisdom really is the great tool to use for teaching and learning. Most people in general find technology intresting and they spend more time on it. People in general spend most of their time experimenting and learning how to use technology. Technology enhances thinking. A child, for instance, can learn and do extremely well in a computer game becouse it is intresting and when it comes to learning, most learners find shool work BORING and some take it as a PRISON term.
However, it is the responsibility of the teachers to ensure that learners learn. Due to the fact that learners prefer technology to their school work; it is important for teachers to incorporate technology in their teaching. This will create learners who are Enthusiastic, Eager, Keen, Dedicated, Devoted and ready to learn. So teachers, what are you waiting for? use cell phones, computers and any type of technology that you might find useful for your subject or topic that you are busy with.
My name is Tsholofelo and I am a third year student at the University of Johannesburg. I major in Mathematics and Psychology. I believe that teaching is an inmportant profession in every society because it creates doctors, engineers and other professions.
ReplyDelete“Technology is queer thing. It brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other.” Dr Dezduda (2000).
My perspective on the article of Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives to Digital wisdom, and the video clip is that technology is unique because you can find all the necessary information you need at a very fast rate like a speed of light, without using basic information like news papers and limited books from the past.
Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives to Digital wisdom are clear concepts to understand a deep difference between young people of today and many of their elders from the past decades.
Digital Natives to Digital wisdom elaborates more about the use of digital technology in schools, how technology can be cooperated in class, in different workplace by different people who are more or less the same age. Digital wisdom enhances capabilities like cognitive power, memory and proper rationality on matters.
According to Andy Clark and David Chambers (1998), “Extended cognition is a core cognition process not an add-on extra,” This quote emphasizes the point that all the digital immigrants will adapt to any phase of the use of technology unless they are proactive and begin with an end in mind, so through technology learners are encouraged to be proactive and not receive information passively from the educator.
“In ancient times they had no statistics so they had to fall back on lies” Dr Shimmy (2001). Since technology is available information is more reliant and educators can refer learners to base their research on the internet and search engines. In the classroom situation technology will benefit the learners by providing them with the significant ability to find practical experiences of their daily lives, so that one day they become the life-long-learners and be creative about different phenomenon that they may come across in life.
However, corporation of digital technology in class may allow learners to engage themselves in the process of making, designing, planning and evaluating their own decisions in a very critical and rational manner.
My name is Ronald Shongwe; I am a third year student in the bachelor of education, majoring in English and psychology. The “Digital Wisdom” article is very interesting indeed to read. Izienne de Lange “said... (she) believe, that Digital Wisdom” can be used to make us not just smarter but truly wiser.” As a matter of fact I do support what she is saying.
ReplyDeleteThe “Digital Wisdom" article thus states or outline the importance of technology. In the last half-century, we have witnessed the birth and development of a new era: the information age. Digital technology the primary vehicle of the information age has transformed the modern education system, workplace and is pervasive in the development of new knowledge which this thus enables other important systems to improve. The digital technology has also dramatically influenced our capacity to educate referring specifically to us as upcoming teachers. Yet, the application of digital technology in education has been disorganized and uneven. Pockets of innovation in localized environments are thriving, but the promise of open access, greatly enhanced teaching and learning, and large-scale use has not been realized.
This “Digital Wisdom" article, to me, just describes a natural evolution. “Digital Wisdom" article, a follow-up to his much discussed digital native/digital immigrant concept. Gone is the age issue – Prensky says the distinction is “less relevant.” Moreover, the article also outline about the emerging digitally wise among us, youth and adults alike, to embrace digital enhancement and to encourage others to do so. With our eyes wide open to enhancement’s potential harm as well as its benefits, let us bring our colleagues, students, teachers, parents, and peers to the digital wisdom of the twenty-first century. Prensky says “Digital Wisdom" , refers to recognition of both the digital and the wise: He or she accepts digital enhancement as an integral fact of human existence, and he or she is digitally wise, both in the considered way he or she accesses the power of digital enhancements to complement innate abilities and in the way in which he or she uses enhancements to facilitate wiser decision making. To conclude, the “Digital Wisdom" article also states that Young people of the digital native generation possess sophisticated knowledge of and skills with information technologies. As a result of their upbringing and experiences with technology, digital natives have particular learning preferences or styles that differ from earlier generations of students.
Hello my name is Khumbelo Manavhela. I am a third year student at university of Johannesburg. Technology that we refer today as digital wisdom has increased to a certain extent to which digital immigrants are incapable of coping with some essential needs of life. Digital wisdom is required in this century in order to live life. The introduction of mp3, iPods and computers which were not common in the 18 century makes learning to be much easier for instance the use of calculator in mathematics. They used to use their own brain to do an addition and subtraction. Digital technology makes life easier. The increases in digital technology are an increase of wisdom to human beings. We learn lot of things trough digital technologies. Communication is much better between learners and educators through sms’s and e-mails. On the other hand it is also efficient in terms of information storage, brain can lose lot of information that we come across but with digital wisdom we are able to keep information forever.
ReplyDeleteTeaching is very interesting in the 21st century because educators have many options to interact with learners. In the old times digital immigrant did better without technology but now we live in a technological advanced world. The quote from the video that says, ‘If you cannot beet them join them’ is very relevant to the learners of today. It is the responsibility of the educator to educate themselves about the new digital technologies. They grew up in times where they were no cell phones but learners understand some of the things much better through their cell phones. People learn in different ways and digital implication must be utilized to make better learning environment for the learners.
I agree that this is the digital/ technological age and that learners do prefer to be taught by means of the use of technological tools such as cellular phones, computers, ipod's et cetera. firthermore I must emphasize strongly on what the author of the video said, that these tools (cell Phones; computers et cetera) should be used for educational purposes and not misused for the learners pleasure, however, how does one ensure that this technology will not be mis used?
ReplyDeleteSecondly the statement made:"If you cant beat them join them" is true, and in this video the author has made certain recommendations on how educators should use technology to their advantage within the classroom which is very impressive! As a soceity we need to accept that technology is here to stay and that it has advantages within the field of education which can outweigh the disadvantages if used efficiently!!!
im mokoena mj, known by max. i stated on my first article on the effects of technology on our dairly lives. most of the changes happening in our lives are processes but technology is not. for example, imagine if university management can decide to reallocate our faculty to Hillbrow. how are you going to feel? it will take time for you to accept. another example, ineternet was only on computers, now on our phones. the change did not have neg impact in our lives and it came as an added value.
ReplyDeletechanges in technology have an advantage on our lives. it need us (future teachers) to broaden our minds, have another look on it so that we can use it to our advantages. its a fact that technology add value and interest in education. (how many people are willing to learn through PC, and other technologies, and how many who are willing to learn from text books?)
how interesting it can be, if one day your learners can gt lessons through the use of video clip, email, mms etc. technology helps ppl to overcome unknown disruptions.
Hi everyone, my name is Erin and like most of you I am in my third year of completing a BEd. I am friendly, easy-going and love to smile:)
ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed reading this article and watching the video clip. The video clip and the professioinal studies lectures we have had so far have been so inspiring. I come from a family of teachers from the "old school" who believe in books and only books as a means of research and teaching.
I am very much in favour of the idea of using technonlgy as a means of teaching. The content of what we teach has changed many times and as teachers we are constantly trying to find ways to relate the content we are teaching to the learners way of life. Seeing as though technology is such a huge part of learners lives, why not incorporate it into the way we teach. I am a huge supporter of using technology tools for research because I think not only will it teach the learners how to search and research using the internet but it will also encourage them to become more critical of the information they read and gather. My goal is to find creative and original ways in which I can use the relevant technologies in my classroom.
Although I am completely in favour of embracing technology, I do acknowledge my 'roots' in books, magazines and newspapers. I think a healthy balance between using internet technology, books and print media should be achieved. In my opinion (perhaps still a bit 'old school') I believe there are certain skills a learner should gain; how to look up a word in the dictionary, how to write a letter and how to spell correctly without using spell check -you would be surprised at how many learners have not yet mastered these skills.
In conclusion, I think a healthy balance between technology and books in our classrooms would create wise, savvy and creative learners.

ReplyDeletewe live in the technological world, we like it or not we have to allow change to happen.as i read the article i am reminded of the changes that happened while i was growing up. as a child we where excited when we stopped using candle for light and electricity was introduced in houses. after that changes where fast from electricity to tv's, video's and now dvd's. that poses a big challenge to old people because they could not catch up with the rapid changes and for us the young people it was exciting to learn fast but more than learning fast seeing your parents being helpless in operating remote controls and depending on you.
technological era has improved our lives in such a way we can communicate globally and share ideas.in the oldern days old people used to narrate stories and teach us values of life but when the person passes on some information goes with him. thaks to technology now we can record the stories and reach other ethnic group and share our values.
as technology grows fast even for me as a young adult i find myself being challenged by the teenagers with their stereos.i am unable to differentiate the difference between the ipod and the mp3 and i find it difficult to understand why they put on headphones and sing along.
watching kids using cellphone it makes me wonder if they are born with the skills.my 16 months old baby know how to talk on a cellphone and she has never broken it while when i was growing up my parents didnt allow me to answer telephone.as times changes even our thinking capabilities are impproved." I believe it is time for the emerging digitally wise among us, youth and adults
alike, to embrace digital enhancement and to encourage others to do so".
i think teachers should learn to adapt to the technological environment quickly. as we have an obligation of reaching lifes through education, we should learn to understand the lives of the people we want to reach. i strongly agree with the video clip on using the tools learners like most. as they are always on mixit and listening to mp3 we should create a way of teaching through them.we should adapt and use things that are distructive in class to our advantage.
Greetings to everyone,my name is Lebohang Molobi from Kagiso.
ReplyDeleteI respect the enhancements of technology in ours lives in this era, this has made the human life easy and confortable. It is therefore good to use technology where it is needed,i.e. Data capturing, communication and so on.
I am agaist the fact that humans should rely on technology, the human mind is greater than any other computer that has been made.If we use technology to an extend that computers think for us,this will make us weak and we wont be able to think for ourselves.Remember the brain is like a muscle thus it needs a work out like any other muscle and technology will not provide this work out.
We can use technology but the old conventional style of teaching should never be forgotten, because one day we would run short of electricity technology would be useless at that moment.Thank you
Good day everyone. My name is Sarah and I am a third year student at the University of Johannesburg. I can't say that teaching as always been something that I have wanted to take on as a profession however towards the end of grade 11 as I started to explore my options, I realized that I would be happiest teaching.
ReplyDeleteLooking back at my days as a young girl, I can remember the excitement we all shared after my family purchased of our first computer. At the time it was such a mind boggling gadget. Now that computer that caused so much excitement 15 years ago is outdated, slow and unreliable. Similarly to everything else in life, things are constantly evolving and improving. It's more likely that there are more people in this world who have a computer as it has become a common household gadget. Technology has become a part of our day to day lives therefore it should be expected that us as teachers incorporate technology in our lessons. The information that is provided to us through the internet is amazing and it should be used wisely.
However, in my opinion I believe that since digital technology is so advanced and fast, unknowingly we expect every aspect of our life to be faster and more advanced. Nowadays we get frustrated when we wait at the robot for more than 3 minutes. I believe that certain skills that I learnt as a child are not expected of the learners today. For example, the calculators that are manufactured today are so advanced that you are able to change a fraction to a decimal and even plot graphs. Secondly, any child can type out their essay on the computer and using spell-check they can correct all their spelling mistakes resulting in them not learning to spell properly.
On the other hand, due to this technological advancement, we as educators need to embrace the changes and adapt them to our learners. Sadly this can only be fully reached if the equipment is provided by the school (computers, laboratories etc.)
I’m Nontokozo, a third year education student. I’ve watched the video and also read the article. I agree that digital technology is part of our lives and we need to get used to it.
ReplyDeleteIt allows people to get access to internet and get information. It is true that nowadays learners have opportunities to learn more about the latest technology and are more technologically advanced than learners who attended school two decades ago. They have things like iPods, computers, cell phones etc those things are technology themselves.
The video itself encourage learners to use cell phones and iPods in their classroom for various reasons like taking notes etc and can chat through technology for class discussion. As educators we have to make teaching interesting to learners by using technology in our classrooms although there are still disadvantaged schools which doesn’t have learning tools like technology. PowerPoint presentation and other media can be used by educators to make lesson interesting.
Hello educators my name is Mr. Mamba and I am doing my third year majoring in mathematics FET. I also like to add my views concerning the movie and the article that I watched and read respectively.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to agree with the majority of my fellow educators about the importance of using the technology to enhance learning. Technology has become very much sophisticated tool in learning today, but we cannot always rely on it. This happens in rural areas where you find that people and learners are not used to technology. And one more thing, technology costs money which most of the people cannot afford to use it as it is costly.
hi, my name is Tarryn and i am currently in my third year studying education, majoring in biology.
ReplyDeletemy opinion on technology being used in schools is that it is mostly a good thing. if learners are becoming more technologicaly advanced, so should our teaching methods in order for us to be effective in the classroom and keep the learners attention
my only concern is for schools and learners that may not have access to facilites such as proper internet computer labs, or i pods as mentioned in the movie clip. i would also be concerned about whether or not learners would become lazy with the amount of technology they have at their fingertips.
all in all i agree that technology must be introduced into the classroom, i just feel that it should be done with caution.
hello, my name is shalene. i was born in Natal. I now live in Komatipoort by thr Kruger Park. I I am a third year education student. I studied Maths as my major from two years, but i changed my major to biology now as i prefer it.
ReplyDeleteI feel that technology is very iportant to have in the classroom. If you look at power point presentation for example, you can show the pupils proper pictures and you can set the work up so that they can understand it. The students could also use a computer so that they can access the internet to do research for projects.
Computer and the internet could also help those students that are less fortunate. You can also use a tv in the classroom to show them movies and footage based on the work, this will help the students.
Hello everyone, I am Dave, a 3rd Year Education student at the University Of Johannesburg.
ReplyDeleteUnlike most of my collegues of my year, I grew up in the "Old" system of Education, where we were expected to read from text books and ... well thats about it really. What strikes me most about modern education is that there are so many different forms of media that can be utilized as education tools. The vast majority of learners these days have or at some point come into contact with computer gaming in some form, either at an arcade or on a home PC. Some games in the past have tried to include educational media and have "Failed" miserably according to the sales compared to the games with mindless violence. So it becomes difficult to say, in this area that games and education can work together, perhaps the right mixture has not surfaced.
With reference to the Video file, I must say that using iPods and Cellphones are a great idea. Why not have all the details of the days homework "Bluetoothed" to the learners! And why not create a Podcast for the more Audio orientated learners (This could also be of benefit to Blind Learners!)
Many years ago it would only have been fantasy to have such technology available and instead of fighting with the learners to put away their "Tools of Learning" why not include them, whatever they may be!
However a vision of the future as a warning:
Sometime in the future, technology will allow for information to be streamed directly to the brain! Could we embrace such technology in which the learner becomes a passive open vessel into which the worlds "knowledge" can be poured into? Would the learner become unmotivated to participate in active learning and in some way just be an extention of the WWW without any real experience of their own?
Hi everyone my name is Bronwyn and I am in my third year of studying to become an English teacher. I am always looking for new things to learn. I enjoy reading and photography… Oh and incase I forgot to mention it I am addicted to chocolate…
ReplyDeleteThe article on digital wisdom was very informative and I found myself wondering how the world did without some of these tools in the classroom. We go to school to learn and be equipped for the future but are learners learning in the correct way for our changing world… Most children in schools today have a cell phone and access to the internet and they know how to use it effectively in the social areas, but as the article pointed out we as teachers can be missing a big gap in learning if we do not use this ‘techno’ knowledge that the children of today have to our advantage. Incorporating internet research and even facebook discussions into our curriculum can be a way of grabbing the children’s attention without them seeing the subject you are teaching or project that you are giving them as boring. And it is highly possible that they could take in more than if you taught them the old way (Chalk and blackboard).
However I strongly believe that there will be no true substitute for the printed book . I also feel that the introduction of too much technology into a classroom learning environment will have a negative impact on the learners. As a teacher you could be standing in front of a class who never learns to use a dictionary because on mxit the word is spelt for them with predictive text, or they just use the sms language where spelling does not matter. So While the article made it clear that a step forward into using technology in the classroom would improve our students learning I think that a total jump into using technology for everything in teaching would do more harm than good and end up counter productive for both the teacher and the learners. So why not use the best of both worlds
Hi all, my name is Victoria. I'm a third year education student majoring in English and Psychology.
ReplyDeleteReading the article about digital wisdom made me think about how technology has opened countless doors for us as potential teachers. Our generation has the opportunity to learn so much more because of what technology offers us. I believe that we should incorporate technology into the classroom as much as possible, but at the same time, we shouldn't allow it to make us lazy. All of us can benefit from the use of the Internet and cell phones, but we should also stress the importance of reading, writing and doing things like simple maths equations without the use of a calculator.
If I think back to when my dad got his first cell phone, I laugh, because I had to sit him down and explain to him exactly how to send an sms. When that didn't work, I had to write out very clear, basic instructions because he had so much trouble understanding the concept. At the time, he was so against the use of a cell phone, but now even he can't deny its usefulness. Exactly the same thing happened when we bought a computer, and now, my dad can't live without it. All it takes is to accept technology, learn how it works, and use it so that it can benefit you.
I do believe that we have to hold on to the basics in life. Human characteristics like good judgement, morals and intuition cannot be bought online. No computer game or movie beats immersing yourself in a good book. But nothing stops us from using technology to our advantage. We can teach and learn so much through technology, as long as it doesn't encourage laziness and a lack of imagination.
A digitally wise person will accept and use digital enhancements, but not lose sight of the simple things in life. I believe that the integration of the two is the most productive way to learn, teach and live.
Just to make a brief comment, I am not saying that technology is good or bad, they both have there good and there bad points. And to incorporate it into schools would be brilliant, but think about those middle class parents, who have no clue on how to use these devices and do not have the money to afford them. Will the government be supplying those who do not have a cell phone for instance?????????????Although in the world that we are living in today, technology seems to be the only way to go!!!! So what can we do as students going into the field of Education, to make it more beneficial and available to all in our society????? Those old and young, rich and poor!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIn my work I have come across many children in South Africa who are not natives to the digital world let alone the written world. To assume that technology will always be a viable option in this country is slightly farcical. How can we be discussing projecting ourselves into the future when there are still tree schools in places as close to us as orange farm?
ReplyDeleteSurely basic necessities need to be addressed before we can start to fantasies about the luxury of teaching through pod casts.
I realise that is may seem to be a slander on the blog but I do not see a reason why this is not a valid idea.
Good Morning. I am a third year education student and currently work at a special needs school. I am very interested in special needs education and definately see myself working in this feild.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article it got me thinking about the objections to the so called digital enhancement. My worry is this- it is important to teach with and to the times however one must learn to walk before you can run. Technology should be used as enhancement to learning but should in no way become a substitute for participative learning that is currently employed. We cannot become to dependent on computers, we need to know how to do things manually as well. Cast your minds back a couple months when we had all the load shedding, what could was technology then?
The other issue that worries me is the fear of leaving some behind. We as teachers will go and work in a variety of schools and some will have the funds for the latest computers for every child but most schools will not have those kinds of funds. Teachers should have the skill of using technology to enhance the learning experience but should still have the basic teaching skills mastered. We should focus on getting all schools and all learners to the same level without people leaping further into technology, therfore widening the gap. It is not only the people who did not grow up where the technology was not yet invented who suffered but those people in todays world that do not have any access to this technolgy who suffer. This lack of access will end up being very detremental to them. I reiterate what I said earlier, we need to get everybody to the same point before we go running into the future.
Hi everyone.. my name is Odette and I m currently a third year BEd student majoring in English.
ReplyDeleteAfter having read the article by Marc Prensky and having watched the video clip, I have come to realise how crucial digital technology has become in our society and what an important role it plays in the teaching - learning environment.I have also realsied that an "technological take-over" is inevitable.
As the video clip emphasised, today's children are wiser, more advanced and more knowledgeable when it comes to using technology and hence are more capable of learning through the use of technological aspects such as the computer and Internet. The article also pointed out that technology is in a constant process of change and it is because of this that I believe, as future educators, it is our duty to include technology in our classrooms. It is proven that through the use of technology, children are able to access information quicker and therefore are able to learn faster. I also believe that technology brings a sense of "fun" and enjoyment into the classroom and allows the children to relate more with what they are learning.
Hi guys my name is Muj and I'm also in 3rd year and studying education and I specializing in English.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article and watching the movie and also going through all my peers blogs I tend to agree with the majority who say that technology and education should go hand-in-hand. And we as educators must be aware of the constant changing that takes place in our modern day and age where you will buy a new top-of-the-range cellphone or laptop and tomorrow there will be a newer and better one out on the market.
With all this,we as educators should learn to incorporate this new technology into our classrooms and keep the learners more in turn and motivated to learn using something that does appeal to them. However we should not allow technology to take over our learning but as I have said before rather just incorporate it and work together to attain optimal learning within the classroom. But with technology being used in the classroom comes both pros and cons but isn't there with everything concerning education?
Hi, my name is Anees. I am a third year education student who thinks 'digital wisdom' is essential to educators. Children of today are clued up and involved in the world of technology, therefore it is important for educators to have some skills and knowledge with regards to computers. One of technologies biggest uses to humans is its capacity to store voluminous detailed information.
ReplyDeleteTechnology enhances the teaching and learning process, but the downside to it is that not all schools in South Africa have the facilities and finances to inculcate and use 'digital wisdom'.
With the age of digital wisdom, we as humans should not forget about morals, intuition and good judgements, for this is what separates a brain from a computer box, i would assume.
is technology a wise and beneficial aspect of education? well.... from reading the article and watching the video i came to an understanding that every method of teaching and learning has both the good and the bad and computers and internet are no exception. lets start by looking at pros of technological use in education. since our learners have already taken far more interest in the technology than anything else in their lives (including school work) and believe it or not the truth of the matter is most of them spend more time on facebook and mxit that the maths or science textbooks mainly because thats were they get more stimulation and creativity, and because of that they never bored and there is always a way of making something interesting. the point of this essay on the wonders that technology does is that, if children can learn and be able to keep vast amounts of information on cars and their technicaliities because of technology it wouldn't be such a bad thing to embrace them with school subjects threw technology. regulating technology use in schhols can also help those who have no excess regularly as then their school enviroments will be forced to make a plan that they have access to internet.
ReplyDeletethere are cons to this whole thing as well like learners becoming lazy to think and relying too much on technology but those can easily be crushed as the truth of life is even in the work place systems are set up to make sure that all one needs to do is made easier and less straineous by specific software.
at the end of the day using technology in education will do less harm than good, and it wouldn't be such a bad thing as technology (including cellphones) has the world in its hands
Hi I'm Janay a.k.a Ms Nay...
ReplyDeletePersonally, I love technology and don't know what I would do without it. Can you imagine a no smsing, mxit, googleless life?
I, therefore, like the idea of incooporating technology into teaching and I myself look forward too using it in my classroom. In this new age I do not see how we cannot consider the use of technology within the classroom... Times changed guys! The blackboard and charts just aren't appealing anymore. Powerpoint, a movie, radio, now that's what I'm talking about!
The aim of education is to eqip learners with knowledge and skills. Today these knowledge include technology.
People misunderstand the use of technology in education and yet if just used properly it can change the world of education. This is exactly what comes through the reading and videos: Use it effectively to enhance the classroom situation.
...WELCOME TO TECHNO-EVERTHING!!!...
Hey all im Kim
ReplyDeletein a nutshell i think that all of you guys made some really powerful comments about technology and our roles as educators in the technological world.
personally i feel that as educators we should always remain technologically advanced and be aware of new developments in the technological world.while reading the article i was reminded of how far we have come as a community and the important role it plays in our daily lives.
using technology in our classrooms is vital because it allows the learners to think and work creatively.
"Playing" is the most effective way of learning, they say. When the learners get to use technology it's there means of playing, fun, they learn better, they learn faster. Is that not what we want?
...Come guys, lets be technolicious!...
Hey everyone............................. From the video clip i have pick up that When teachers decide to use technology in their classrooms, they want to select products that will enhance learning goals in ways that are compatible with their philosophy and style of teaching. That is, they want technology resources that complement their teaching practice, build on children's varied learning styles, provide additional depth to content mastery, and assist children's knowledge construction. Another thing i think the video clip intent to alert us to the fact that Today, the number of technological resources are available for us as educators to use them in teaching learners.
ReplyDeleteYes technology is a great tool to use in instructing, but we need to understand the fact that not all our learners will have an access to these tool most school around the rural areas don't offer computer lessons and with the changing technology people have to acquire computer skills within their reach, and we also need to be sensitive on the fact that other parents wont' be able to affort to buy cellphones for their children and some parents believe that their children has to finish school first before they can buy them cellphones and computers.
Hey, my name is Klarinda and i'm a third year student of education. i'm majoring in Psychology in senior phase.
ReplyDeleteI have red the article and found it very interesting and true and do agree that tegnology has become importent in everyday life and in education.
I think learners should be taught in a way that suits and encourage them best. That way they will not feel forced to learn but instead they will want to learn. Allthough learners have various ways of learning they all are digital learners, learning through tegnology. I think digital tegnology is a good way of learning if used well. In other words, digital learning also have its disadvantages, such as making learners lazy.
Finally, I think that tegnology should be enhanced in schools for learners to use it while they can and at the same time learn the way they learn best.
A wonderful good morning to everyone.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article, "From Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives to Digital Wisdom" and watched the video clip I begun to thought deeply about the way education is being convey to children.
Actually, the old way of teaching and learning was not that bad because if one can compare the learners of today and those before, you can see that the quality of education they have is totally different. As we all know that the most learners of today learn for the sake of passing wich is differnt from the old group. Furthermore, the old process of teaching and learning accomodated everyone, taking the rural areas, not all people can afford there and not all rural areas have internets, libraries and the recent models phones.
However,I do believe that technology is important in teaching and learning because it accomodates all kind of learners. Most of educators use a computerized style which I fully think accomodates all kind of learners. For an example, a visual learner would find it easy to understand because there would be pictures that explain the terms and for auditory learners, there would be sound clips to explain the content of the lesson. In addition, this world is dominated by technolgy now, so I think using it in schools will make learners to feel welcomed to it.The use of cellphones, newspapers and internets is the way to go for because for all kind of entertainments learners do today are all from these things. Lastly, for "digital immigrants", I think they do face problems in using technology however they are fast students so they will be fine soon.
In conclusion, I think technology must be used in all schools so that all learners can live with it.
Thank you
Ntokozo
ReplyDeleteHi everyone my name is Ntokozo Ntuli, I am third year education student majoring with mathematics and IsiZulu.
Reading the article and watching the video about digital technology made me realise that most of the things that we are using nowadays are based on technology. I think that using technology is good or bad,but we as educators we should use it wisely to educate our learners because by using it would be a good beneficial to them. People spend most of their time using technology such as chating, playing games on the computer and on their cellphones.
The increasing of technology nowadays is becoming a major role in our lives. The article made it clear that we as people we forget easily, but the systems that we created help us to remember, and i would like to agree with author that technology is making our minds lazy, because we do not bother ourselves to remember the important things that is happening in our lives. We use diaries, cellephones, computers to keep our informations on them. Technology is very significant and we should use it in the classroom. If we use technology in the school learners will become more technological and they will like to know more than they think they know.
hi, my name is Kefilwe and as all of you, I'm studying BEd and am also interested in this discussion.
ReplyDeleteI for one would like to take a step back and look at this technological age from an outsider's pespective and what I gather is we are dismissing the relentless con's of entering a digital age. All over the world Parent and Teacher have lost control and obedience of their children mainly because of their early development due to being digitally wiser than their parents and teachers. I am all for initiaves and positive developments when it comes to learning, but how do we teach and impart moral values and humanity to our children when we are expected to communicate with them through programmed machines?
hallo daar.
ReplyDeleteEk is Beninca Botha, 'n 3de jaar Opvoedkunde student en my hoofvak is sielkunde.
Hi my name is Nasreen and I'm a third year education student and I'm focusing on mathematics as my area of learning.
ReplyDeleteBoth the article and video both made me look at technology in new way and made me realise that technology really does have a large part to play in education these days, however i also feel that we as educators do not use this to our full advantage because we can all use technology and they way it affects us in a positive manner so as to help motivate and assist the learners.
But as a few of my peers have pointed out we should not get complacent and allow technology to do everything,it should just be there to assist us and not make us lazy and not motivated to work or do well within the class. In my opinion we as educators should really do our utmost to work together with technology to improve our learners performance in class and in life in the end and maybe teach them life-long lessons.
The article is about the use of technology and how can technology be used to enhance education.again it spoke about the challlenges that older people faces when they had to use technology. They found it challenging because it it is a different world than what they are used to.
ReplyDeleteAs for the video clip deals with the same challenge that elderly people come across. the thing called technology, but this time it is more for them becuase they are from a diffferent epoch. I fount the clip challenging for me as wwell because i am also challenged by this use of technology as i am fromm the same era as a the article and the clip is refering to. I did not know that technology is so vast and it has so many way in which we as teachers we can enhance our learning as well as the learning of our learners
Greetings to all fellow Digital Wisdom followers!!
ReplyDeleteAs we are carrently living in the days of the 21st century, technology has been part of our everyday life. Communication, Production, Life Style, Education, and other unmentioned spheres in our lives, are technologicaly dominated. This domination, however, enforce us to become technologicaly wise so that we can be able to live according to the carrent standard of living.
On the one hand, the article by Mark Prensky, mention how the topic of the article is analysed. As titled Digital Wisdom, the digital part is for technology and wisdom is simply being wiser in all spheres of life. So when the two are combined, they explain how today's life has changed into requiring people to be technologically wise. However, i love the line which states that; "Technology alone will not replace intuition, good judgement, problem-solving abilities, and clear moral compass. This means that, being technologically wise doesnt mean that you need technology to solve problems, but means you should have technological knowlegde to be able to overcome today's challenges. One the other hand, the vedio clip introduces new ways of which teachers can use to teach with the technological tools available. The clip also alerted me of things that i never thought can be used to teach,e.g celphones. Nevertheless, the clip motivates me to think of more things that i would like to use in my teaching profession.
I have a good feeling that Prof Studies will be an exciting module this year and i hope what we'll learn will have good impact on our course and future teaching......!!
Hi, my name is Juan-Andre Joubert. This will be the second year I'm doing Prof Studies 3A, because I was not able todo the end semester exam due to some troubles I had. I live in the East Rand, and this year is my FINAL year of study. I'm currently enrolled for the B.Ed (FET) degree.
ReplyDeleteI've read the piece about Digital Imigrants nd Digial Natives. Being a Native myself, I do agree with this piece of writing however, there are a few point I would like to point out.
I do beliee that all these sources of information such as cellphones, Laptops, Computers and Internet can be a dissadvantage as well. The children of these days are morelazy than they were when in the past. Lazy in a sense that its just so easy to get information. For example, if the child had to do an assignent on lets say Romeo & Juliet, they dont even have to read the book. All they can do is go to www.sparknotes.com and VOILA! There is Romeo & Juliet in a shortened summary format. Or lets say the child has an assignment on the Life of Hitler and the Third Reich. All the child has to do is go to www.wikipedia.com and all the information is there, whether it be correct or incorrect.
Of course, times are changing, and I do believe that we as future Educators needs to implement the ew tecknowledgy, and the resources are provided forour own benefit, but where do we draw the line? The video said that why ont we implement the cellphone in our classroom. Either imbrace it, or let the struggle continue in the classroom. Again I say, it's a good idea in it's own right, but where do we draw the line? This is where the saying comes into great consideration, Give a hand and they take the entire arm.
This is my view of the entire situation.
Thank you

ReplyDeleteMy opinion on whether or not digital education would be beneficial to education is yes to technology in education. The implication of technology in education would be an asset. As learners will be able to acquire the knowledge in which the learners would have been taught in classroom at a later stage for studying or to make references.
The involvement of technology in the classroom is effective as the learners will not only accommodate particular learners. But include all the learners which include are both visual, auditory learners. A perfect example would be that if learners need to Google what a lion is. The learners would be able to see and possibly if the instructions are clear enough hear how the lion roars.
The learner learns particular skills by using technology such as the computers and cell phones such as how to improvise furthermore how to give instructions.
Furthermore the implication of technology in educations keeps the learners captivated and involved. The movie states that some learners dreaded school and some did not graduate after college, this was not said in so many words. By involving technology at an early stage, the attitude of the negative learners could change.
Contrary to my opinion is that only a selected few of the learners are the beneficiaries of the collaboration of technology and education. Only the learners that have the resources, which is technology such as cell phones computers and so forth. The learners from varies schools and areas of our country are lacking in the availability of resources. Another possible disadvantage is that learners may rely only on one form of technology, and may become lazy and unproductive as all is “at the click of a finger” as they say.
Hello, my name is Arkim Ngobese. I am doing third year BEd(FET) at University of Johannesburg and would like to share my views about using technology as a new teaching tool. After recognizing that the new generation enjoys using technology more than anything else on this world, therefore why do we not use technology that they prefer, to encourage them or lure them into learning with fun? The new generation spends more time playing television games, playing music in their ipods, playing all sorts of games in their play stations and they cannot live without their cell phones. To them cell phones has become a necessity rather than a luxury. Therefore educators need to develop interest in the learning environment.
ReplyDeleteLearners can easily recognize something they have seen on their computers or television screens than something they have read on books or hard copy. For example if you give learners an assignment to go and research about a certain topic on books and give another group the same assignment, but this time allow them to search the information on internet, you will find out that the learners whom you allowed to use books will have little information as compared to the learners whom you allowed to use internet sources. This clearly indicates that learners prefer internet sources over books. Therefore to create that conducive atmosphere for learners in the classroom situation we need to use something that entertains them most.
Hi my name is Busisiwe whom is also a 3rd year student, and majoring in English. With the regards to the article and video my pesrpective is that altohough it is stastically proven that technology has created a huge positive impact towards the age of Homo Sapiens and therefore may be referred to as the Digital Homo Sapiens do we forget that there are certain abstact, norms and values that cannot be taught via the digital age. Human Wisdom cannot be aquired through using digital tools such wisdom can only be aquired by asking our elders like in isiZulu we believe "indlela ibuzwa kwaba phambili" which basically means we as youngsters should ask our elders whom have experienced and gone through whatever we need assistance in . my point is that our elders did not have such technology and learnt the harder way by reading textbooks and became successful people by aquiring, technology is just another way of making things easier for us which at the end of the day may not give us the real value of the lesson aimed at.In conclusion i totally disagree that we need technolgy to keep up and be better people i belive in the old way.

ReplyDeleteMy view of whether technology in education is effective in education is both yes and no. The inclusion of technology in education is effective as it accommodates the different kinds of learners in the classroom which includes the visual and auditory learners, meaning that these are learners that learn from hearing and seeing actual visuals. By using technology the two types of learners are accommodated in education through education.
Technology is an asset as it saves time the learners are able to do the activities in which they are required to do at any given time of the day irrespective of whether they are at school or not. The learners acquire different kinds of skills from using technology such as how to give instructions. The learner benefits both academically and socially as they are doing what they have to whilst doing what they like. For example listening to music.
The disadvantages of technology in education are that only a selected few benefit from the type of teaching. Those would be the learners that have these resources. Unfortunately not all schools have such resources. Another disadvantage is that the learners may become too relied on technology.
It is very true that Learners are interested in the ever-changing technological world. And that access to technology and the effective use of technology within schools provide future teachers with the tools to meet the challenges of the classroom. But I think this movie has forgotten a few things that it did not cover in it.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a world of ever- changing technology I agree but we must also not forget that the very same world we live in is not even close to being balanced. Where I stay now I agree that I have a computer of my own that has internet, I listen to music on it, watch movies and so on. I also have my own cell-phone with mxit, mmses, video calling and a lot of other fancy stuff, which means that I can say am more than technologically advanced, therefore it would be great to use that and enhance my learning.
Where I come from is a semi rural place, located on the north eastern part of Kwazulu natal, in a place called Ladysmith, Emebhekazi. At home it is a mud house with no electricity. Running water is a luxury, I struggle with the signal when I am at home, I use the neighbours cell phone to call my mother since you would never see a land line. The whole area never stops talking about the things I bring home whenever I come, since they do not know anything there. So my argument is that, when will the lowest old technology reach places like my home town? And how can we use it there if it is not there. I hope technology also reaches us soon.

ReplyDeleteEk glo dit is veilig om te erken dat tegnologie ons wêreld oorgeneem het en dat tegnologie aanhoudend verbeter word. Die wêreld word bestuur deur tegnologie, omdat tegnologie take kan uitvoer wat onmoontlik is vir die menslike brein. Daarom stem ek saam met die leesstuk: From Digital immigrants and Digital natives to Digital Wisdom. Verder glo ek dat tegnologie baie take vergemaklik.
Due to globalization, South Africa urban and rural areas are influenced by changes take place in society. Children of South Africa are part of global village. This result from change in communication (televisions, cell phones and computer), transport (airplanes, ship and motor) and architecture. Because, children are use to technology it can be simple for them to learn using modern technology, unlike children of the past. Teachers’ role is to facilitate children to look at the positive side of this technology and not reward negative side. In addition, teachers’ must not complain reason being that their role remains similar. For example, in the computer lab teacher is needed to lead group of learners to attain learning outcomes. He can also use this technology to communicate with learners (giving them guidance on given assignment) on weekends to remind them about imperative work. It is unprofessionalism to avoid technology in learning and teaching in the twenty first century.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon everyone.
ReplyDeleteI am here again. Actually, i wanted to comment to a specific somebody but the way these commonts are I failed. I think all of you guys really appreciate the way education is conveyed to learners these days but I am still having a question, Do you think the "Digital immigrants" are coping in this current style of the process of teaching and learning?

ReplyDeleteI found the article and the video very interesting about the way teachers can incoporate technology in their teaching during the contact sessions. The world is changing and almost everyone is being technology advanced. If most of the taechers can be able to adapt to this kind of change, there won't be lagging behind when our students have to change the into the digital world.
The digital wire is in a way making things easy for students who are being label "digital wise" to show off their creativity making use of technology. The video has been an eye opener for me as a training teacher as into how I can make use of technology to bring a spark into my class and make my classroom fun while bringing the creativity of the students to the classroom.
Good day, my name is Nika Bantjes, I am 21 years of age and a fourth year BEd student.
ReplyDeleteIs technology making our children dumb or is it actually helping them perform better?
After reading the article and watching the video clip, I have come to the conclusion that digital technology allows people to perform better and enhance their capabilities. Why would we not make use of everything we’ve got? It would be stupid to go do research in a library for hours when we can just get the same information on Google and either print it or remember it in our memory. People also say that children get lazy with mathematics for example, because they don’t use their brains to do sums anymore, they use calculators instead.
But why do we have to learn to do things without technology these days? It is not going to disappear, infact it is just going to keep on getting better. Technology and the way learners research, enhances cognitive capabilities and helps the learner to function in the modern world today.
I feel that using technology, especially in education, is a good thing and should definitely be used more to motivate learning.
Hi my name is Ashmeen and Im a third year student at UJ majoring in Mathematics.
ReplyDeleteI believe that as time is passing by technology is becoming more and more advanced and that society is relying more and more on it. As a teacher I feel that it is important to make use of all forms of technology in the classroom and try to introduce it to learners from an early age as this can help them in situations. Its vital for people to keep up with the modern and advanced world we live in and by educating learners with technology there is no harm done, only knowledge gained.
Therefore as a teacher I will try make use of technology in every teaching strategy of mine to ensure that learners keep up with the modern world and will also try help the older generation with technology such as cellphones, radios, tv etc as they were not priviledged in their time to be educated in this field.
Hallooooo!!!! My naam is Biancka 'n derde jaar onderwys student.

ReplyDeletethe influence of technology on learning and teaching, has became a major concern in recent years, the reason being children and teachers are in fact using technology to do a variety of activities.i do agree with the article that infact it would be a great idea to combine teachnology and teaching, because that can be a very fun way of teaching and learning. many children do use music as a source of entertainment, so if that could be intergarted into their learning, that would be fun, learnerss might perform a specific theme, of the learning that was done in class, that would make it easy for them to understand and also other learners would enjoy and at the very same time understand what has been taught.
the problem with technology is that learners become addicted to surfing the net, in that way learners become lazy to think because they get everything fron the net. another problem with technology is that learners become traped to the type of language that they use in making sms'ses.in that way they cannot produece something that is academic. so as a future teacher i would say that, technology should be used but on a limited scale. in that way we should consider the advantages and the disadvantages of using technology.
My name is Bathabile Kubheka. I am a 3rd year student at the University Of Johannesburg and i am majoring with IsiZulu and Life Orientation. I enjoy learning.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the movie and reading the article, it became clear to me that we are surviving just because of technology and technology becomes more advanced. Technology is taking over the lives of the present and future generations. So, as time goes on many things will change like caring ID and bank cards but we will use our finger tips.
Technology is taking over in our children and our social life. It is therefore that since 90% of our children use the new and improved technology why can't we do the same within the teaching ground i.e. teach using power point, over head projectors, iPods, children phone and the chatting systems used by our learners Mxit to check their homework’s if they do not understand something. Thus would also help various types of learners to understand and apply themselves since technology can foster visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning. The positive part of using technology in the classroom is that of catching learner’s attention and engages them to learn in some way.
Digital wisdom doesn’t mean manipulating technology or finding a way to be less active it means that we as human have the ability to do more in less time in our fast developing and chancing world. Using your digital wisdom can help you to interact with people across the world, to collect info from any library, encyclopaedia or book imaginable.technology must be applied in various subjects like life orientation.technology create a medium exchange where people exchange dear ideas and by being advanced in technology.
Hello, my name is Nasreen Hassan and i am a third year education student majoring in english.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article, I can confidently say that technology is a neccessity in every persons life. Technoloy is used everywhere and everyday and it is through technology that we are where we are today. Technology is important in all feilds and i believe that it can make a huge difference in the classroom. It is importatnt to use variouse forms of technology in the classroom not only because it is an excellent way to teach students but also as it will make them familiar with it. Since it is so widely used, it is important that sudesnts become fmiliar with it as it will help them in the classroom and once they leave school as well.
However, I do feel that technology is the cause of many problems that occur especially in the classroom. In the CD that I saw, it said that learners use computers from as young as 4years old. This to me is shocking because alot of filth can be found on computers. Therefore, i feel that while technology is a vital part of every persons life, it should however be used in moderation.
Goeie dag mede studente. Ek is Corine van Vreden. Ek is ‘n 3e jaar FET student, my hoofvakke is Rekeningkunde, Plantkunde en ek het verlede jaar Chemie en Anatomie ook gedoen. Ek is een van min Koshuiskinders in hierdie groep. Ek is in Benjemijn Dameskoshuis.
hi there, my name is ilana hannie. i am a 4th year student in education, and majoring in mathematics.
ReplyDeletewith regards to the article, i firmly believe technology is a fast and rapid epidemic that is taking over our world. technology can play an important role in education, and thus learners are advised to do this sudject. since most of them do not know about technology.
i ahd done funtional technology myself, and have learnt a lot from where we came and what the future still holds for us.i believe however technology does accomodate a better life and easy life for us and the future. however it does not end. many countries are still aimimg to better our life styles.
although however, technology has its pros and cons. and the negatives about technology is that it is taking away our natural environment and we are far too dependent on it now. and therefore from the article i agree 'human thinking is no longer necessary or important.'
and we do need thinking to develop for our cognitive skills.
therefore is important, but should however be used wisely.
Hey all my name is Jody Rampersadh. I an i forth year education student majoring in Life Orientation.
ReplyDeleteThe article was very interesting as well as true. Technology basically rules the world nowadays. It has become one of the most important, fastest as well as effecient ways of communication. Where ever we are and what ever we do it involves technology. Thus technology plays an essencial role in todays as well as the future of education. Technology (digital enhancement) allows people especially children to perform better as well as improve their capabilities. People are able to broaden their knowledge and wisdom because they are able to access almost anything using technology. Digital technology can be so useful in the classroom. It also allows educators to make teaching fun and interactive for learners.
However digital technology can also be catastrophic as children of today have become lazier as everything they need is right at their finger tips. We often read articles regarding to this problem.I think that no matter what anyone says technology(digital technology) is definately here to stay and will one become better and faster. As for the video,I thought the video was short and sweet. It got straight to the point yet it also provided its viewers with the suffecient information it needed to.
Hi, my name is Marleen. I am 23 and a 3rd year student (don't ask). My subjects are Maths and English.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the blog and watching the video, I had mixed feelings about what to say. Yes, technology is definitely making our generation more clever and competent in our tasks and it does help us a fair bit with getting work done. Besides that, it also increases our general knowledge and helps us to understand and learn easily.
However, I have found that technology makes us lazy. I'd rather just type a term into Word to find one with a similar meaning than to get up and look for the dictionary. It also diminishes our social skills and many people base their social lives on Mxit or Facebook.
The important thing to remeber here, is that everything is good, as long as there is balance. So in the end, technology has both it's pro's and con's!
Hi my name is Safiyya Kajee. i attend UJ and im studying education. As a future teacher in this society i think that my opinion matters alot.
ReplyDeleteAs everything has advantages it has disadvanages as well. In this present times i think that technology is very important at school. In modern and urban area schools most of them have already taken upon technology like over head projectors, computers, the internet etc. It is unfortunate that learners in the none advantage schools cannot access such privelages. When i was doing my teachers practicals i came across the computer class and there was a learner who came from a rural school and had never used a computer in her life. She struggled alot and therefore not only in schools but in the real career world it is necessary to have this knowledge.
The disadvantages would be that learners will lose interest in going to libraries and using magazines, encyclopedias, books etc. This will decrease their vocabulary skills and they will lack in general knowledge.
So you see, there are more advantages than disadvantages to technology in schools. Its all about simplicity, efficiency and accessibility.
My name is Len Kotzé and I am a third year B.Ed.FET student majoring in English. I am also doing extra non-degree subjects in order to finish my Human Movement Studies degree.
ReplyDeleteIn response to the reading and movie clip I would like to respond with the following ideas.
When I grew up, technology was starting to evolve. Internet was then only recently developed and not very advanced; it had very limited information available. After school I had very minimal experience with computers and related “technologies” which have since had a huge amount of development taking place; leaving me behind. The pace at which this technology developed, and still is, increased at a high rate. If one does not know how to use a computer or related technological tools, it is only going to get more difficult to function effectively in a technologically advancing world; where the aim is to advance technology and create electronic versions of all the information available since man can remember.
Learners are curious and educators should keep that in mind. Learners should be motivated to keep up with technological advances in order not to fall behind in the field of work or study they choose. On the other hand educators should keep in mind that learners should be taught how to use libraries in order to access information. Technology can also cause one to become lazy as it is an easy way of finding information. Learners could be given tasks in which they are required to search for texts on the internet. The teacher can then instruct learners to find these texts in the library in order to develop their cognitive abilities.
A person that has access to technology from a young age has a great advantage over someone that only starts using it later in life. This is mainly because it is more difficult to process new complex information when one is older. For instance, a very simple example of this can be illustrated. One of my older family members got angry because she thought that her cellular phone tried to “boss” her around when prompting her to choose an option in the menu. It took her a few months to understand the functioning of technology.
Technology is crucial to keep up with new developments in any field of study as the pace at which advances are made is very high. Computers can be used to search for information at a much faster pace than doing a manual search in a library. Computers therefore are great tools and can be very helpful in gaining knowledge. Other sources for specific information may also be obtained through for instance a search with a search engine like ‘Google’. This can broaden the spectrum of information that any given person is able to access; utilizing a variety of technological tools. In the future; these tools will evolve resulting in leading individuals (and possibly groups of people) that are not technologically advanced being left behind as they need to learn these new skills at a high rate. Thus, resulting in us feeling “bossed” around by the new technologies. Therefore the importance of being up-to-date with our skills is emphasized; we need to read, explore and play with these tools to remain up-to-date.
In conclusion I would like to comment that technology is a great tool and that it can be utilized in many ways to develop cognitively. It is also something which can inhibit the development of the thinking process as information is really easily accessible. One should keep up with development but should also create a balance.
Hi everyone my name is Norman ngwenyama I am a third year student my major subject is Mathematics FET .Yes we are living in the world of technology and I suggest we think in terms of digital wisdom I believe that technology can make us smarter and truly wiser. If we as educators make use of it like for instead you can learn other method of teaching a particular chapter that you don’t understand or a subject well by login using epals web.
ReplyDeleteAnd you can make use of Google search finding ways of teaching. I fully agree with the video that we must make use of the technology that our learners are use to like cell phones, and the other items so that we can make the process of learning and teaching become enjoyable in the class room. Colleagues, students, teachers, parents, let us make use of this technology and welcome to twenty-first century. Internet
Iam Vicus Leitao. I have read and watched the article and the complimentary video and my conclusion about both these is a great example of teaching by using digital technology.
ReplyDeleteMuch of the technology that we do use or deploy in the academic setting is much too difficult to use so many schools , school learners and teachers do not view technology as something that can actually save them time and make them more efficient but as something that can easily consume vast amounts of time, requires extensive training and is just too bothersome to learn to use.
• hey do not required any training or instruction to be used - if one has to crack a training manual or enroll in a course to use the tool then there must be a better or easier tool.
• The tools must actually make one’s life easier, provide levels of efficiency and actually save time.
• The tools must be free/open source or if they aren’t free, they must provide exceptional value and be of a minimal cost.
• We actually use them.
Finally, the notion of always looking for an easier way or perhaps the better way should be at the heart of learning and at the heart of academia. Education or more specifically learning should be an empowering experience and the tools, systems and methodologies that we use in this process should always provide a way for us to improve and enrich our lives.
Hey all! My name is Joanne, a third year B.education student and i love pink candyfloss!
ReplyDeleteJokes aside...
After a long session of reading, thinking and debating within myself I have come to the conclusion that technology has two sides to it. The article I read is biased towards technology. It states only the positive aspects concerning what technology does (and can do) for the digital immigrants and natives. It is true that digital technology helps us enormously in terms of communication, self enhancement, collecting and analysing of data as well as being a major asset to the medical profession.
The side of digital technology the article conveniently does not cover, is the fact that technology has been a major cause in a decrease of personal relations between human beings. Many of us have seen how friends communicate via sms or mxit while being in the same room. Communication is 82% bodylanguage, 11% tone and only 7% is defined as actual language. With this said you are missing out on 93% of the interaction. Technology is portrayed as being a necessity. We humans evolve and adapt but we never take the time to step back and analyse why. I acknowledge that technology has helped our species substantualy however in many ways technology is slowly stripping us of our individuality. May it remain only a helpful source in improving our lives and yet, may it not become our lives.
This blog likely delves into strategies for promoting critical thinking, ethical behavior, and healthy digital habits. By equipping students with the skills to navigate the digital landscape effectively, educators play a vital role in shaping responsible digital citizens. https://www.mobilezmarket.com/
